The Classic Crochet Granny Square

There are many versions of this pattern. Some have two chains for the corner space,
some do not have a chain one between the spaces and some always start the new
round in the corner space. All are correct. It’s simply a matter of personal
preference as to which one you do. They all end up looking the same…more or less!

• ROUND 1 (Pink)
• 4ch, slip stitch into first ch to make a loop
• 3ch (this counts as first tr post) 2tr into loop (makes first treble
cluster) 3ch
• 3tr into loop, 3ch (second treble cluster)
• 3tr into loop, 3ch (third treble cluster)
• 3tr into loop, 3ch join to top of begging ch-3 to join.
• Cast off and sew in ends.

• ROUND 2 (Red)
• Join new colour into any ch-3
corner space with a simple knot. ch chain
sl st slip stitch
• 3ch (this counts as first treble post)
tr treble crochet
• 2tr in same ch-3 space, 3ch, 3tr in same ch-3 space (makes first
corner)
• ch1 (this moves you on to the next space) 3tr, 3ch, 3tr in next ch-3
space (makes second corner)
• ch1, 3tr, 3ch, 3tr in next ch-3 space (makes third corner)
• ch1, 3tr, 3ch, 3tr in next ch-3 space (makes fourth corner)
• ss into 3rd ch of begging ch-3 to join. Cast off

ROUND 3 (Lilac)
• Join new colour in ch-1 space, 3ch (counts as first treble post) , 2tr
in same ch-1 space. 1ch
• *3tr, ch3, 3tr in next ch-3 space (makes first corner) 1ch,
• 3tr, 1ch in next ch-1 space
• repeat from *twice
• 3tr, ch3, 3tr in last ch-3 space, 1ch
• ss to top of being ch3 to join. Do not cast off if you wish to
continue in same colour.
Round 4 (continuing in same colour)
• 3ch (counts as first tr post), 1ch
• 3tr in next ch-1 space, 1ch
• *3tr, 3ch, 3tr in next ch-3 space
• [3tr in next ch-1 space, 1ch] twice
• repeat from * twice
• 3tr, 3ch, 3tr in last ch-3 space, ch1
• in next ch-1 space 2tr join to top of beginning ch-3 to join.
Round 5
• 3ch (counts as first tr post), 2tr, in same space, 1ch
• 3tr in next ch-1 space, 1ch
• *3tr, 3ch, 3tr in next ch-3 space
• [3tr in next ch-1 space, 1ch] three times
• repeat from * twice
• 3tr, 3ch, 3tr in last ch-3 space, ch1
• 3tr ch1 in last ch-3 sp
• ss to top of begging ch-3 to join.
• Repeat round 4 & 5 until you want to stop!
