Course Title : Creative Nonfiction: The Literary Essay
Credit : 3.0 Units
Pre-requisite/s : Creative Writing

Course Description:
This course introduces to the students Creative Nonfiction as a literary form to develop among them
skills in reading, writing, critical thinking and creativity. It is focused on formal elements and writing
techniques, specifically essays under the literary essay such as reflective and personal essays, including
memoir, and blogging, among others; furthermore, the subject acquaints the students on the elements
of Creative Nonfiction. The subject develops among students’ skills in reading, and thinking critically and
creatively, that will help them to be imaginative readers and writers. This course also trains students on
writing essays in relation to specific structure and language.

Course Objectives:

At the end of the course, the students should be able to:


1. identify dominant literary conventions of a particular genre;
2. differentiate the various literary genres by their distinguishing characteristics;
3. characterize creative nonfiction as a modern genre and describe its elements of fiction and
nonfiction;
4. explain the relationship of elements and ideas found in the various forms and types of creative
nonfictional texts through close reading;
5. compare and contrast the different forms and types of creative nonfictional texts;
6. describe different types of essay based on their language and structure; and
7. compose reflective, personal and literary essays which conform to the elements.
