TYPES OF ROOMS

1. Adjoining Room: An adjoining room shares a wall with another hotel room and is connected by a
door.

2. Adjacent room: An adjacent room is very close to another room but does not share a common wall
with it.

3. Cabana: A cabana is suited away from the main hotel building, in the vicinity of a swimming pool or
sea beach. It does not have beds and is generally used as a changing room and not as a bedroom.

4. Duplex: A duplex comprises two room situated on different floors, which are connected by an
internal staircase. The suite is generally used by business guest who wish to use the lower level as an
office and meeting place and the upper level room as a bedroom. This type of room is quite expensive.
5. Double Room: A double room has one double bed for double occupancy. The size of double bed is
4.5feet to 6 feet.

6. Double-Double Room: A double –double room has two double beds and is normally preferred by a
family or group as it can accommodate four persons together.

7. Efficiency Room: An efficiency room has an attached kitchenette for guest preferring longer duration
of stay. Generally, this type of room is found in holidays and health resorts where guest stay for a longer
time.

8. Hollywood Twin Room: It has 2 single beds with a common headboard. This type of room is generally
occupied by two guests.

9. Hospitality Rooms: A hospitality room is designed for hotel guest who would want to entertain their
own guests outside their allotted rooms. Such rooms are generally charged on hourly basis.

10. Interconnecting Rooms: Interconnected rooms have a common wall and a door that connects the
two rooms. This allows guest to access any of the two rooms without passing through a public area. This
type of rooms is a deal for families and crew members.

11. King Room: A king room has a king size bed. The size of the bed is 6feet by 6 feet.

12. Lanai: A lanai has a veranda or roofed patio, and is often furnished and used as a living room. It has a
view of garden, sea beach or waterfall.

13. Murphy Bedded Room: Murphy bedded room is a room where the bed is hinged at the base of the
head board and swing up into the wall foe storage. During the day room can be used a sitting /living
room and at night the bed can be laid for the guest to sleep

14. Parlour: A parlour has a living room without bed and may have sofa and chain for sittings. It is
generally not used as a bedroom. European term for this is Salon.

15. Penthouse: A penthouse is generally located on the topmost floor of hotel and has an attached open
terrace or open sky space. It has very opulent decor and furnishings, and is among the costliest rooms in
the hotels, preferred by celebrities and major political personalities.
16. Quad: A quad room has four separate single beds and can accommodate four persons together in
the same room.

17. Queen room: A queen room has queen size bed. The size of the bed is 5 feet by 6 feet.

18. Studio: A studio room is a small apartment which combines living room, bedroom, and kitchenette
into a single room.

19. Suite: A suite comprise more than one room, occasionally, it can also be a single large room with
clearly defined sleeping and sitting areas. The decor of such units is of very high standards, aimed to
please the affluent guest who can afford the high tariffs of the room category.

20. Single room: A single rooms has one single bed for single occupancy. The size of the bed is normally
3 feet by 6feet.

21. Siberia: A term normally used for inferior quality rooms ,such as near the staircase.

22. Twin Room: A twin room has two single beds for double occupancy.

23. Triple: A triple room has three separate single beds and can be occupied by three guests. This type
of room is suitable for groups and delegates of meeting and conferences.

ROOM PLAN

There are various food plans which the hotel offers to the customers. The various plans are –

American plan:

American plan includes room rent, breakfast, lunch and dinner. The early morning bed-tea /

coffee can be served but it depends on the policy of the hotel.

Modified American plan:

Modified American plan includes room rent, breakfast, with either lunch or dinner. The early

morning bed-tea / coffee can be served but it depends on the policy of the hotel. Continental

plan: Continental plan includes room rent, and continental breakfast only. The early morning

bed-tea / coffee can be served but it depends on the policy of the hotel.

European plan:
European plan includes only room rent. There are no meals are included in this plan.

Go plan:

Go plan is applicable in a chain group of hotels, where the guest has simultaneously reservation

in more than one hotel of the same chain and final settlement of the bill is made in the last hotel

of chain from where the guest checks out finally.

Bermuda plan:

Bermuda plan is same as continental plan but instead of continental breakfast, American

breakfast is served.

TYPES OF ROOM RATES

Hotels always have more than one rate code category for each room type. Room rates categories
generally correspond to types of rooms available to sell in the hotel ( Eg: Suite, Deluxe,
Premiere, Studio, Pent house etc. ).
Room Rates and rate codes may also vary according to the available room features such as room
size, location, view, furnishing, décors etc and also with competitors pricing.
Standard Room Rates and Rate codes used in the hospitality industry:
Rack Rate: Is the Standard rate or Published tariff defined by the hotel management for a
particular room category/type. This is generally printed on the tariff sheet of the hotel and these
details are also submitted to the local government authorities for hotel licensing and in some
countries for Gov. tax compliance. In other word's these rates are always without any sorts of
discounts.
Corporate or Commercial Rate: These are rates offered to companies that provide frequent
business for the hotel or its chain. This rate may vary according to the volume of business
guaranteed by the companies. Eg: NEG1, COR1 etc.
ADHOC Rate Code: These are normally non-standard rates which is offered as special one-
time rates for first time corporate's.
Group Rate: These are rates which is offered to groups, meetings and conventions using the
hotel for their functions.
Promotional Rate Codes: These rates are generally offered during low occupancy periods to
any guest to promote occupancy. Early Bird Rates, Stay for 3 and pay for 1 etc. are some
examples. These rates may also include certain add-ons to attract the customers like free WiFi
for 24 Hrs, free buffet dinner etc.
Incentive Rate Code: The Rate offered to individuals who belong to an association or holders of
special membership cards or Credit cards. Eg: Amex / VISA / Master cardholders get 5%
discount on Rack Rate, Lufthansa Frequent Flyer members get 25 % discount etc. For hotels,
these rates always give potential referral business.
Early bird Rate: This type of rates are only open X days before arrival. Eg: Open only when 7
Days before arrival, 14 Days Before Arrival, 30 Days Before arrival Etc.
Family Rate: A rate reserved for families with children. Usually, these rates include Extra Bed
charges and may also include some free add-on activities for children.
Package Rate: Rates that includes a guest room in combination with other available events or
activities. ( Eg: Best of London package which includes room rental, all meals, site seeing,
airport transfers etc. ) Package rate can be also a simple room and meal package like American
Plan ( AP), Modified American Plan (MAP), Continental Plan ( CP )etc.
Best Available rates ( BAR ) : These rate codes are the lowest discounted rate available for a
day which can be offered to the guest by the Reservation or Front desk staff. BAR can be off
different types:
'Dynamic BAR' - Has different tiers and each tiers will be opened and closed according to the
occupancy of the hotel. ( The new age hotel management software's does this automatically for
the Revenue Mangers.)
'Daily BAR' - Has a pre-defined daily room rate regardless of room categories ( Run of the
house) and occupancy, these rates are set according to the day of the week, as per the demand of
hotel rooms in the city, special day's or seasons, as per the room demand forecast done by the
hotel revenue manager.
Complimentary Rate: A Room rate with zero room charge which is offered to special guests,
industry leaders, Gov. Officials etc.
House use Rate: A Room rate with zero room charge which is used for rooms stays for hotel
purpose. Eg: Manager or duty room, In-house General / Resident manager room etc.
Zero Rate Code: This kind of rates are used as system requirements for PMS's as these would
be tagged to Dummy rooms, Paymaster rooms and Group Master rooms.
Virtual Rate / Follow Rates: A Special Type of rate codes whose values are derived from
another rate code or rate group. Eg: BAR1 which is 10% off on the Rack Rate.
