Pakistan's Haubara Birds Facing Extinction

The indiscriminate hunting of endangered Houbara bustard birds in Pakistan by rich hunting
parties from the Gulf of Nations have pushed the species toward Extinction. The hunting was initially
banned by the Pakistani courts, but under continuous pressure from the court provincial
governments of Sind, Baluchistan, and Punjab as well as the federal government, recently the court
lifted the ban on the hunting of this vulnerable species.
Some people in Pakistan have been advocating for sustainable hunting of the species instead of
a complete ban, but highly debatable. Reckless hunting for the decades has pushed this beautiful
species towards extinction and it is now critically endangered in Pakistan.
No reliable or credible statistics on the population dynamics of the species are available either.
Unless specially protected by a law, the species runs the risk of becoming extinct in the wild in the
next few decades.
Under these circumstances, the only logical approach to save the species from Extinction in the
not-so-distant future is to immediately start comprehensive captive breeding program for the species
Across the Nation.
If the captive breeding program runs successful and produces an appreciable number of chicks,
then reintroduction programs could be initiated in their wild habitats.
Only after rebuilding the population for sometime in the wild and allowing them to breed
naturally to reach a sustainable population put some restricted hunting with planned.
Currently, the low number has made this species vulnerable and with zero or poor monitoring,
sustainable hunting practices in Pakistan for this dwindling species will not work.
Game only when the stable population is achieved with strict monitoring on the ratio of male
to female hunted per season. If the females (no true statistics available) are being taken out of the
population through random hunting, the population is sure to pass through a bottleneck in the wild
habitat, wild habitat, with high vulnerability to eventual Extinction.
The people of Pakistan need to decide what is more important -a few of petrodollars or
protecting the biodiversity of the nation.

Nowadays, the police have been applying the new regulation concerning the use of seat belts. In
European countries, this regulation has been applied for a long time. However, this new regulation
has become controversial and is an interesting topic to discuss. Here are some of the arguments.
The use of the seat belt has been proven to reduce the risk of injury or death in an accident. The
seat belt has become a standard component in cars. The research shows that most cars accidents will
cause an injury to the head. Frequently, drivers or the passengers driving without seatbelt died
because of this. By wearing the seat belts, the injury will not happen since belts restrain our body on
the car seat when the accident happens.
Unfortunately, many cars, especially the old ones, don't have seat belts. This is because the
traffic conditions in the past were unlike the recent traffic conditions. The designer of old cars didn't
consider a seatbelt as an important part. Besides, the drivers wear the seatbelt will think that they
are completely safe, so they may drive carelessly. They are safe, indeed, but how about safety of
others?
The seatbelt is only one of the ways to reduce the risk of car accidents. It doesn't mean that we
are completely safe. In short, our safety depends on ourselves.

b. To became a standard component in cars
c. To reduce the risk of injury or death in an accident
d. To prevent the drivers driving cars carefully
e. To increase the risk of injury in car accidents
11. Who considered a seatbelt as an unimportant part?
a. Police
b. People
c. Drivers
d. Passengers
e. Old cars designer
12. ".... That they are completely safe." (paragraph 3)
What does the word "they" refer to?
a. cars
b. seat belts

MY MOST UNFORGETTABLE HOLIDAY

In 2015, I went to Derawan Island with my friends and that marks my most memorable holiday
ever!
In June, our school was having summer holiday, so we thought to ourselves that it should not go
to waste. We quickly browsed the internet to find a good holiday destination and after an hour of
heated debate, the four of us agreed to give Derawan Island a try. It was purely out of curiosity of
none of us had been there before. We arrived at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport at 5.30 am as
the flight was at 7 am. First, we flew to Balikpapan and waited for about an hour to continue the
flight to Berau. As soon as we touched down in Berau, my friend called the tour agent that we had
contacted earlier in Jakarta. They had got a car ready to take us to Labuan Batu. From Labuan Batu,
we took a speedboat for about an hour to Derawan Island. It was such a long trip to Derawan but it
all paid off as soon as we saw how beautiful the island was.
My friends and I were quickly ushered to our room in in the resort. It was fantastic! The rooms
were in a cottage that was situated right above the sea. So we only had to step out of the terrace just
find ourselves out in the open sea! After unpacking our luggage and washing up, we went to the
dining hall to grab our dinner. The dinner was only simple seafood dishes. The surrounding totally
enhances the dining experience, making the food taste much better.
The following day, we took a speed boat tour, hoping from one Island to another. Our first trip
stop was a Kakaban Island where we hiked to reach the lake and swim among stingless jellyfish. The
last time I heard, they were only three places in the world that have stingless jellyfish; two of them in
Indonesia! Isn’t that great? The next stop was Sangalaki Island where we got to visit sea turtle
conservation and took lots of pictures with sea turtle babies. They were so cute!
Our last stop was the Maratua island where we were able to feed fish and sea as three-legged
sea turtle. The sea three-legged Turtle wasn't born that way. We were told that it was swimming in
the open sea when it was still a baby then its leg got caught in plastic trash and could not grow even
when the sea turtle reached adult. One of the island guards saw the sea turtle and saved it. He also
untangled the plastic trash that bound the sea turtles leg but it was too late. Since then, the sea turtle
is kept in a special space next to the resource in Maratua Island and the guards take turns feeding it
to ensure its survival. This is why we should never litter and endanger other creatures! After Maratua
Island, we headed back to Derawan Island to catch a late dinner and turned in.
The following morning, we wake up early and ate our breakfast in the dining room. Then, the
driver drove us back to the airport so we could catch a flight back to Jakarta. We arrived at Jakarta,
exhausted but terribly Happy! it was the most unforgettable trip I have ever experienced so far!
