DESCRIPTION

1. SYSTEM DESIGN

1.1.PURPOSE

The purpose of this fire fighting system is to protect by HP CO2 a frame 6B gas
turbine inside off-base enclosure. The protected compartments are:

- G.T auxiliaries compartment

- G.T compartment
- Load / gear compartment
- Generator exciter compartment
These 4 compartments constitute one zone of CO2 release.
Carbon dioxide fire protection system extinguishes a fire by raising the CO2
concentration within the enclosure; thereby reducing the oxygen concentration
to a point below, which combustion is not possible (15 % oxygen by volume).
Within one minute after actuation, sufficient CO2 has been supplied by the
initial discharge to achieve an extinguishing concentration (34 % by volume).
This concentration is maintained for 30 minutes by a gradual addition of more
CO2 from the extended discharge system (to compensate leakage).
The initial discharge system will extinguish any fire within the enclosure and the
extended discharge system is designed to avoid re-ignition.

CO2 fire fighting system functionning is released in accordance with NFPA12

requirement.

- Sounder driver booster
- Detector monitor modul
Each point has an address ( already programming )
The mentioned control panel, contained in a rack cabinet 19” for 40 units is
equipped to control 4 zones for fire detection , 3 zones for fire extinguishing.
All the detection and extinguishing moduls are mounted behind a rear panel,
they are connected to appropriate termination modules and from here to a
terminal board for the connection of the cables coming from the field.
The front part of the control panel is composed of a LCD display, a keyboard
and a serie of leds which indicates the different status of the system.
The detection system alarms, are shown both on the LCD display and on the
relevant led front plate signalling alarm and fault of the groups with engraved
words.
All the detection in and the command or alarm outs, are controlled for a short
circuit or line opening, causing a fault condition clearly recognisable.
During the possible maintenance works, you cannot to activate any undesired
command. See notice TFX.
The control panel has a “service code” (1234) and engineer code (123456)
which allows the access to particular functions only to the enabled personnel.
The programming of the system is stored in EEPROMS mounted on the
central card. ( detection, extinguishing modul ). See notice.

are energised. This involves both initial and extended discharges.

- Pressure switch (PSH 161) on extended discharge manifold confirms
CO2 release to the fire-fighting cubicle.
- "CO2 released" signal is send to speedtronic.
- One minute after release, initial discharge is finished.
- 30 minutes after start of release, extended discharge is finished.
- G.T. start is forbidden until pressure switch (PSH 161) is reset.
Note: - CO2 flow rates are regulated by pipe diameters and nozzle sizes.

1.3.5. Emergency manual release (by manual lever)

It is possible to actuate manually the release by a lever located on one CO2

bottle (for example if the fire fighting cubicle is inoperative):
Bottle 101 AQ is equipped with a manual lever
In case of manual actuation:
- There is no time delay before discharge
- If fire-fighting cubicle is still in operation, pressure switch (PSH 161) will send
CO2 release signal to fire fighting cubicle that will send a signal to the
speedtronic to trip the G.T. and will actuate the audible and visual alarms (XA
060, XA 061, XA 063 and XA 064) around the G.T. enclosure and the flashing
lights (XL 065, XL 066, XL 067) inside the GT enclosure.
- If fire-fighting cubicle is inoperative, the G.T. shall be tripped manually and
there are no alarms during CO2 discharge.

1.3.6. Mechanical CO2 lock off

In case of maintenance in a protected compartment, it is necessary to inhibit

CO2 release by mean of lockable isolation valves each manifold. Position of
these valves are supervised by fire fighting panel :
Initial and extended discharge can be inhibited by valve HV 151 and HV 161.
If both valves are closed (position switches ZSL 151 and ZSL 161 are
actuated), then :
- Signal "CO2 mechanically locked off" is displayed on fire fighting
cubicle.
- Fire detection is still on operation
- Horns and flashing lights (XA 060, XA 061, XA 063, XA 064, XL 065,
XL 066, XL 067) will be actuated in case of fire alarm, but CO2
release will not be actuated.
- A n alarm "CO2 locked off" is sent to speedtronic.
- G.T. starting is forbidden.

If only one isolating valve is closed (ZSL 151 or ZSL 161 actuated), indication is
given to fire fighting cubicle and "system in trouble remote to speedtronic.

OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL
DESCRIPTION

THE CARBON DIOXIDE: INFORMATION, HAZARD.

The chemical formula of carbon dioxide - a compound of carbon and oxygen -
is CO2. It should not be mistaken for the poisonous compound of the same two
elements, carbon monoxide: CO.
Carbon dioxide does not support combustion, and as it’s about 50% heavier
than air; it will when used as an extinguishing agent form a blanket over the fire
and extinguish it.
At normal pressure and temperatures, carbon dioxide is a colourless gas with a
faintly astringent smell, which makes the bystander cough.
Carbon dioxide is a non-conductor of electricity. This is very important in engine
rooms, as it means that extinguishing with carbon dioxide will not damage
electrical installations such as generators, motors and switchboards. Further,
as carbon dioxide is chemically neutral and thus has no corrosive effect on any
material, engines and other equipment may be run as usual after a thorough
airing.
Carbon dioxide in concentrations of 3 - 4% will have no effect for relatively short
exposures other than to cause one to breathe rapidly. Concentrations of 4 - 5%
will cause dizziness after 30 minutes - 1 hour. With concentrations of 5 - 7%,
the inhalation is dangerous after scarcely 30 minutes.
A concentration of 9 - 10% already involves an important difficulty in breathing
after few minutes; and with 15% a rapidly losing consciousness. At
concentrations of 20% and upwards, CO2 has a terrifying action: it stops the
breathing and death will follow in about 20 - 30 minutes unless the victim is
removed to a source of fresh air and given an artificial respiration.
Consequently, carbon dioxide must not be discharged until everybody has left
the space; any space in which carbon dioxide has been discharged must be
thoroughly aired before anybody is sent into it without a smoke helmet.
The CO2 contents of the room can be checked by means of a special CO2
indicator or a Davys safety lamp. If the CO2 concentration is higher than 5 -
6%, or if the Davys lamp is extinguished, the airing must be continued.
Nobody should be sent into a space in which CO2 has been discharged without
being warned that he must come out immediately if he finds difficulty in
breathing or throbbing.
If it’s suspected that the space has not been sufficiently aired then anybody
entering the space must have a safety line.
Masks with a smoke filter, for example an ordinary gas mask, do not protect
against the effects of CO2.
Persons trapped by the carbon dioxide must immediately be carried out into
fresh air. If persons are unconscious, artificial respiration should be given
immediately; they should not be given water or any other drinks.
Before a space is filled with carbon dioxide, it must be properly closed and
sealed. The space must be kept filled with carbon dioxide until it has been
definitely established that the fire has been extinguished and heated materials
or fixed equipment have been cooled down.
It must always be taken into consideration that the fire may break out again if
fresh air is allowed into the space, i.e. when the hatches to a hold are opened.
