steke daarvoor kry.

skort.”

QUESTION 2: (Summary of above article)

The unfortunate occurrence that happened in March 2017 at the Hoër Tegniese Skool Louis Botha in Free state had
been a heading for a while but unfortunately not for their academic records. There have been several reported cases
where teachers had been assaulted by learners in this specific school. News reports say that one of the teachers did
not report what happened on the day, because he thought that he would be able to sort this issue out between him
and the learner. One of the incidents was where a student slammed a trailer door out of anger when his teacher told
him to stay outside for he did not have any material at school. The problem with this was, the teachers hand was
slammed inside the door at that moment and he had to get stitches. No apology from the learner was reported. At this
same school another teacher was assaulted by a learner where it got so serious that the teacher went to the hospital
with a serious injury and the principle of the school also went for anxiety relief.

At this school it has also been reported that stealing has made its way to the front page of the news. This was an
incident where a learner stole a laptop out of a classroom and when this issue had been dealt with, it was a fact that:
This student had a key to the classroom.
The conclusion of these issues was that the learners who had caused these problems, was expelled after meeting
with the SAOU and governing body of the school.

QUESTION 3:

I will explain my steps in bullet point form. I think it is very necessary to reflect on what happened. We need to
establish why it happened and what could have prevented this from happening. Also how to prevent these type of
problems in the future.

 Stop first, regain discipline:

Stop your learner before he gets too mad. It is not that hard to see when your learners gets angry when they do not
like a specific situation or being confronted with something they did wrong. By talking to him before he can stand up
and have the urge to yell at you as the teacher, you can regain the discipline from him. Freeze your learners and wait
until every single one is looking at you, get their attention. EXPLAIN why you said and did what you did, and make
them understand that it’s not personal, just business!

 DO NOT GIVE PERSONAL THINGS TO A LEARNER:

Because of the above article, it is very clear that the specific learner stole the teacher’s laptop because they had the
key to the classroom. It is a very normal mistake that we as teachers make. Giving all personal things and trust in any
learner we think looks trustworthy. This is a big mistake. Take care of your own responsibilities.

 OBSERVE:
I personally think it is very important to always be aware of your surroundings as a teacher. When you read the
situations evolving in your classroom, you will be able to prevent a very bad situation from occurring. Have a routine
in your classroom that you and all the learners know. When something is out of routine, you will definitely feel a
different atmosphere and this atmosphere can sometimes lead to a bad situation waiting to happen. While only
observing, you will give them the self-confidence to make them feel like they can carry on by themselves. NO ONE
likes a teacher screaming and using a high-pitched voice 24/7.

 Be Understanding:
We as teachers need to understand that, just like our personal lives are sometimes a reason for how our moods are at
school, learners also have a lot going on sometimes. I personally think that the above article mentions that the specific
student had an argument with the teacher because he was confronted on why he did not have any school material
with him. Sometimes teachers need to rather listen first and then decide what the best solution for the problem should
be. We as teachers need to think of more than 1 possibility of why he does not have anything at school and also why
he is in such a bad mood.

 Love the learner, dislike the situation:

Make sure the learners know that in a misbehaving and disrupting situation, you are not happy with it, but try to make
it very clear that you are not making it a personal thing. Make them understand that you still like them as learners, but
that you are very disappointed in the situation that the specific learner has created. This will eliminate a lot of
confusion and emotional drama amongst learners.

 SET GOALS:
If you and a certain learner has a problem and the situation between you and this learner has not improved after a few
months of really giving your best. It is normal to feel discourage but try to set a goal for yourself and for the learner as
well. Make them believe in goals and that they can accomplish anything they set their mind to. Boost their confidence
by showing them everything they have done right and make them feel like they have a clean slate and today is the
beginning of the rest of their lives.
