I. Dance Lab 3 - ZAMBOANGA HERMOSA FESTIVAL DANCE

“Zamboanga Hermosa Festival,” also known locally as “Fiesta Pilar,” is one of Zamboanga City’s most
important festivals. It honors the city’s patron saint, the Nuestra Señora La Virgen del Pilar whose image
is enshrined in the equally historic and venerated Fort Pilar. The feast day proper on October 12 is a
special holiday in Zamboanga City, and the shrine itself holds novena masses throughout the day. During
the festival, the most awaited part (aside from the procession) would be the Festival Dance Competition.

Also, October is noted as the Indigenous People’s Month. National Indigenous People’s Thanksgiving
Day is observed on October 29 every year in the Philippines. It is a day to honor and promote the rich
cultural heritage of the indigenous peoples of the Philippines.

In line with the celebration of Zamboanga Hermosa Festival and Indigenous People’s Month, the
groups in PE class will choreograph and stage a “Final Show Down” of the Hermosa Festival Street
Dance Competition” which shall feature the following performances:

1. “Jota de Zamboanga” as taught in class, as an opening performance showing Chabacano

Culture.

from the indigenous groups of Zamboanga City (Subanen, Sama, Badjau, Yakan, Tausug, and
Chabacano) and Latino Dances.

2. Dance Lab 4 - PASTORES A BELEN (Chabacano de Zamboanga)
“Pastores” (Shepherds), the tradition was introduced by Spanish priests in the late-1800s, and
spread across the country. This Christmas dance is performed by children as they do the carolling from
one house to another singing “Chabacano villancicos” (Christmas carols in Chabacano) or “canciones de
Pascua” or “canciones o villancicos de navidad.” As they sing, they frolic around and strike their
tambourine (boys) or a ring of flowers or ribbons (girls) on their hands. “Pastores” refers to the
shepherds who first saw the child Jesus on the manger. The children are given coins or candies by the
owner of the house as an act of appreciation for the delightful performance.
The dance steps will be taught in class. The groups will do their own choreography of the dance.
