Problem Statement:
An AASHTO Prestressed simply supported I beam has a span of 34 ft (10.4 m) and is 36 in.
(914cm) deep. Its cross section is shown in Figure 14.18 It is subjected to a live-load intensity
W L=3600plf (52.6 KN/m). Determine the required I-in-diameter, stress-relieved, seven-wire
strands to resist the applied gravity load and the self-weight of the beam, assuming that the
tendon eccentricity at mid span is e c= 13.12 is. (333 mm), Maximum permissible
stresses are as follows:
F' c = 600 0 psi (41.4 MPa)
Fc = 0.45 Fc’
= 2700 psi (26.7 MPa)
Ft = 12√ F ' c = 930 psi (6.4 MPa)
f pu = 270,000 psi (1862 MPa)

f pt = 189,000 psi (1303 MPa)

f pe =145,000 psi (1000 MPa)

The section properties, given these stresses, are

Solve the problem by any of the following methods:
a. Basic Concept
b. C-Line
c. Load balancing
Basic Concept Method:
1
Assume that 10 inch Dia Seven wire strand tendons are used to prestress
2

Initial Condition at Pretressing:-

Aps = 10 x 0.153 = 1.53 in2
Pi = 1.53 x 189,000 = 289,170 lb
Pe = 1.53 x 145,000 = 221,850 lb
 The midspan Self-weight dead load moment is
384 x 34²
MD = x 12 =665,856 in-lb

Fb = (1+ )-
369 138 3220

Fb = -1756 psi < Fci = -2880 psi ALLOWED

Final Condition at Service Load:
 The midspan moment due to live load moment is
3600 x 34²
ML = x 12 = 6,242,400 in-lb
