Learning Competency : Designs a research used in daily life (CS_RS12-Id-e1)
Objectives : 1. Distinguish the following related terms in research:
research topic, research problem, purpose statement,
and research questions
2. Illustrates the development of research idea

DEFINITION OF TERMS
Broad – means it covers a large number and wide scope of subjects or areas.
Specific – means it is particular, exact, or it is clearly defined or identified

KEY CONCEPTS
As a Grade 12 student in senior high school and with your background knowledge in
Practical Research I, can you now manage to craft your own research problem?
There are questions that you need to think of. How do you craft a research topic, and
research questions? Now, close your eyes and think of an interesting research topic.
Try to imagine if you are ready to start your research study. But probably, until now,
it is so hard for you to start a topic alone. Perhaps you will still craft a broad topic that
needs to be specified. This session will give you insights to develop your research
idea.

To better understand research problems, you might distinguish them from other parts
of the research process. The research problem is distinct from the topic of the
study, the purpose or intent of the study, and specific research questions. The
research problem needs to stand on its own and be recognized as a distinct step
because it represents the problem addressed in the study. (Creswell 2012) On the
following brief definitions, consider the differences among these parts of research:
◆ A research topic is the broad subject matter addressed by the study.
Example: Maria seeks to study weapon possession by students in schools.
◆ A research problem is a general educational issue, concern, or controversy
addressed in research that narrows the topic.
Example: The problem Maria addresses is the escalating violence in schools due, in
part, to students possessing weapons.
◆ A purpose is the major intent or objective of the study used to address the
problem.
Example: “The purpose of my study will be to identify factors that influence the extent
to which students carry weapons in high schools.”
◆ Research questions narrow the purpose into specific questions that the
researcher would like answered or addressed in the study. Maria might ask, “Do
peers influence students to carry weapons?”
Looking at these differences, you can see that they differ in terms of breadth from

1
Baybay City Division
Baybay City, Leyte

broad (topic) to narrow (specific research questions) . Let’s examine another

example, as shown in the figure, to make this point. In this example, a researcher
begins with a broad topic which is “distance learning”. The inquirer then seeks to
learn about a problem related to this topic: the lack of students enrolled in distance
education classes. To study this problem, our educator then reformulates the
problem into a statement of intent (the purpose statement): to study why students
do not attend distance education classes at one community college. Examining this
statement requires that our investigator narrow the intent to specific questions, one
of which is “Does the use of Web site technology in the classroom deter students
from enrolling in distance education classes?” The process involves narrowing a
broad topic to specific questions. In this process, the “research problem” becomes a
distinct step that needs to be identified to help readers clearly see the issue.
(Creswell 2012)

Image from (Creswell 2012)

Therefore, for you to develop properly the research idea, it should start from the
research topic, followed by research problem, purpose statement, and research
questions. As you design and conduct a study, make sure that you are clear about
the distinctions among these parts of research and that your written material
differentiates among a topic, the research problem, the purpose, and your research
questions. (Note: From broad to specific)

Objectives : Designs a research problem

DEFINITION OF TERMS
Controversies - a lot of disagreement or argument about something, usually
because it affects or is important to many people (Cambridge Dictionary 2020)

Educational Issues – also known as “academic concerns”, are issues such as

learning difficulties or disabilities, underachievement, lack of attention from teachers,
and bullying, affect a few students throughout their academic careers, from
elementary school to college. (Good Therapy. Org 2019)

KEY CONCEPTS

This session will provide you additional insights as well as tips and sources in
crafting a research problem. Brace yourself for this interesting session. Have fun
while reading!

One of the most challenging aspects of conducting research is to clearly identify the
“problem” that leads to a need for your study. Individuals do not seem to give enough
attention to why they are conducting their studies. Research problems are the
educational issues, controversies, or concerns that guide the need for conducting a
study.
Good research problems can be found in our educational settings, such as:
1. The disruptions caused by at-risk students in classrooms
2. The increase in violence on college campuses
3. The lack of parental involvement in schools for students with challenging
behaviors…… (Creswell 2012) These problems concern personnel in our schools,
classrooms, and college campuses. In writing about the research problem, authors
state it as a single sentence or several sentences in a research report. To locate the
research problem in a study, ask yourself:
◆ What was the issue, problem, or controversy that the researcher wanted to
address?
◆ What controversy leads to a need for this study?
◆ What was the concern being addressed “behind” this study?
◆ Is there a sentence like “The problem addressed in this study is . . .”? (Creswell
2012)

3
Baybay City Division
Baybay City, Leyte

Sources of Research Problems (Talisayon 2017)

- Theories to be validated, extended, modified

- Other studies, particularly their research recommendations
- National/international trends or situations to be described or improved
- Real-life problems, issues, experiences, or situations of Grade 12 students
Students may pose a question to themselves; What are the concerns, situations,
issues, or problems faced by me as a grade 12 student?

Characteristics of a Good Research problem/questions (Fraenkel, Wallen and

Hyun 2012)
1. Feasible - it can be investigated without expending an undue amount of time,
energy, or money.
2. Significant - it is worth investigating because it will contribute important
knowledge about the human condition
3. Timeliness - The uniqueness of the topic or problem; should be in the current
issues or fresh from the society.
4. Ethical - It will not involve physical or psychological harm or damage to human
beings or to the natural or social environment of which they are a part.

Information Sheet No. 3
Subject : Practical Research 2
Grade Level : 12
Subject Type : Applied
Prepared by : Leizl F. Abrantes, T-II Baybay City SHS
Learning Competency : Writes a research title (CS_RS12-Id-e-2)
Objectives : Uses standards in framing a research title

DEFINITION OF TERMS
Active verbs – those verbs, in sentences, which are being done by the subject of
the sentence
Jargon words - technical terminology or characteristic idiom of a special activity or
group (Merriam Webster 2020)
Superfluous – exceeding what is sufficient or necessary (Merriam Webster 2020)

KEY CONCEPTS
The purpose of a title is to summarize the major idea of the paper in a concise and
clear manner. The title should be no longer than 12 words in length and should
avoid superfluous words such as “a study of” or “an investigation of.” Use
active verbs instead of complex noun-based phrases and avoid unnecessary details .
It should be able to stand alone in clarity and be self-explanatory. This means that all
words should be clear to a reader without definition. (CRESWELL 2012) A good
quantitative research title would contain the following:
◆ The major independent and dependent variables in a study, typically listed in
order
from independent to dependent
◆ The participants in a study
◆ The research site or location for the study

Writing a research paper title seems to be a simple task, but it requires some serious
thought. Readers come across research paper titles in searches through databases
and reference sections of research papers. They deduce what a paper is about and
its relevance to them based on the title. Considering this, it is clear that the title of
your paper is the most important determinant of how many people will read it.

Writing a research title can be done in two ways

a. Considering the variables in the study (done before the conduct of the
study)
Example titles: Bullying incidence and student attendance in grade 11
Attitude of millennials on social media bashing
b. Considering the results of the study (done after the conduct of the study)

5
Baybay City Division
Baybay City, Leyte

CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD RESEARCH TITLE

 Condenses the paper’s content in a few words
 Captures the readers’ attention
 Differentiates the paper from other papers of the same subject area
 simple, brief, and attractive
 Use appropriate descriptive words
 Avoid abbreviations and jargon (but known abbreviations such as AIDS,
NATO, and so on can be used in the title. However, other lesser-known or
specific abbreviations and jargon that would not be immediately familiar to the
readers should be left out.
OTHER IMPORTANT TIPS
 have concise statement of main topic
 identify primary variables and the relationship between them
 do not include the words "method and results" (put them in the abstract)
 do not have redundancies such as “study of" or "an experimental
investigation of" at the beginning of a title
 avoid using a "yes-no" question as a title
 Lists key variables, scientific/technical

Learning Competency : Describes background of research (CS_RS12-Id-e-3)
Objectives : Writes the background of the study

DEFINITION OF TERMS
Context – refers to the cause of an event or the situation within which something
exists or happens, and that can help explain it
Literature – refers to a collection of published information/materials on a particular
area of research or topic, such as books, and journal articles of academic value.
National/Local Publications – any research papers, articles, books, and
manuscripts published in the region, country.
Salience – a striking point or feature: highlight

KEY CONCEPTS

Let us start this session by reading the paragraph below.

Buying a new cellphone or purchasing our favorite gadget would always lead us
to check on the best features of the product. Factors such as how many
megapixels, the memory capacity, maximum battery life, video resolution, sound
quality, and even its size will cross our mind. Why do we ask these questions?
When writing a research paper, we do the same things much like a background
check for a certain cell phone or gadget. When conducting a research study, it is
important to determine the conditions and factors behind the study or the
reasons why it has to be conducted (Agustin, 2020).

What is a background of the study? (Natividad 2020)

 Background of the study explains the area of the research to set context for
the issues/problem at hand.
 shows the current information regarding the issues/problem, previous studies,
and its relevant history; and
 Tries to build on gaps in literature that has led to your study.

7
Baybay City Division
Baybay City, Leyte

Problem/Study should contain:

 Comprehensive discussion of the
 (a.) nature - description, more of the general idea of the problem
 (b.) extent - the point, degree, or limit to which something extends
 (c.) salient features of the identified problem or issue
 (d.) Elaboration of the different aspects of the research setting showing in
depth and critical analysis of the situation.

Needed Supports:
 Literature/Previous Studies
 National and Local Publications
 Local/International Trends
 Numerical Data (Graphs/Tables)

WRITING THE BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Considerations BEFORE WRITING:
 “What do I want to inform the reader?”
 “What are the conditions, settings, and situations with respect to the topic and
who are directly and indirectly involved?”
 “why should readers pay attention to the topic, why should they care about the
topic, and why is there a need to focus on the topic?”
 “Have I reviewed the literature, do I have the basic knowledge of the study,
and do I know the key issues surrounding your study?”
Considerations during ACTUAL WRITING:
 “How this problem started? What are causes and factors affecting this
problem?”
 The opening paragraph features the general information of the problem, the
explanation how things should be happening then present the reasons why
things are happening.
 It should justify the presence of gap between what is expected and what is in
the context.
 It should provide context to the information discussed throughout the research
paper. Background information may include both important and relevant
studies either it supports or refutes the study.
 In stating the context of the problem, there are some helpful phrases
suggested here:
 “It is known that….”
 “Researchers have demonstrated…”
 “Debate exist about….”
 and “….is controversial because…”
Checklist:
1. Nature of the problem (2 paragraphs) 2. Extent/Magnitude of the problem
(with data) (1 paragraph) 3. Salience of the problem (1 paragraph) 4.
Elaboration of the research setting - different aspects (1 -2 paragraphs)
