Empowering Minds: Literacy Program for SBSI Marks a New Beginning

In the wake of the tumultuous events that unfolded in 2019, the Socorro Bayanihan Services
Incorporated (SBSI) has taken a proactive step towards rebuilding the lives of its members and their
families. The earthquake that struck on February 8, 2019, displaced 4,000 SBSI members and had far-
reaching consequences on the education landscape of the Kapihan area.

The aftermath of the seismic event saw a staggering 800 learners dropping out of school, a
disconcerting fact confirmed by the Department of Education (DepEd). The migration of SBSI members
to the mountains, coupled with a wave of resignations from teachers and professionals across different
agencies, created a vacuum in the education system. The situation left the youth vulnerable and deprived
of the educational opportunities crucial for their future.

However, in a surprising turn of events, Socorro Bayanihan Services Incorporated has expressed
its commitment to rectify the situation by establishing a school in Kapihan. According to DepEd Siargao
Division Superintendent Karen L. Galanida, this move signifies a positive shift in the organization's
approach toward education and community development.

Presently, 823 children under the umbrella of SBSI have been successfully enrolled in Del Pilar
Elementary School, Atoyay National High School, and the Alternative Learning System. This marks a
significant milestone in reintegrating these children into the formal and non-formal education system. The
road to recovery is challenging, but it is heartening to witness the collaborative efforts of SBSI and
DepEd in ensuring that these children are not left behind.

As a beacon of hope, the Literacy Program, launched today, November 15, 2023, at Del Pilar
Elementary School, Del Pilar, Socorro, Surigao del Norte, signifies a new beginning for the learners from
Kapihan. The program aims to not only provide academic support but also offer a ray of hope for the
community that has endured four long years of challenges.

The distribution of "Gifts for Learning" is a commendable initiative, showcasing the

organization's commitment to ensuring that these learners have the necessary tools and resources for a
successful educational journey. It is a step towards breaking the cycle of educational deprivation and
empowering the youth to build a brighter future.

While the events of 2019 may have cast a shadow over the education landscape in Kapihan, the
proactive measures taken by Socorro Bayanihan Services Incorporated and the collaborative efforts with
DepEd signal a turning point. The Literacy Program launch marks not only an educational revival but also
a testament to the resilience and determination of the community to overcome adversity and pave the way
for a brighter tomorrow.
