of Ashwin Shukla-paksha, and the festival held on
that day in honour of Durga or Devi (on this day,
after the worship and religious ceremonies
performed during nine nights (nava-rdtri), images of
Durga or Devi are thrown into the river). On this
day, it is said, Ram marched against Rowan,
hence it is called "V/joyd dashmi” also.

parrot. Shuk was a born philosopher, and by his
moral eloquence, successfully resisted all attempts
of the nymph Rambha to win him over to the path
of love. He is said to have narrated the Bhagwat

Swanti rain - The rain which, falling into a shell, when the

(according to popular belief) a pearl. It is also
believed that drops of this rain cause Gaj-mukta
(pearl) in an elephant’s head, Go-lochan (a bright
yellow pigment) in the ear of a cow and Bans-
lochan (an earthy concretion of milk-white colour,
known by the name of bamboo-manna) in the
hollow of the bamboo.
The thirst of the bird Papiha is said to be
allayed only by the drops of this rain.
