Earth's Natural

Resources and
the Issues that
Threaten it
MR. JONAS T. HINGCO

INSTRUCTOR

COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

• At the end of the lesson, the students are
expected to:
Learning • Describe the trends and status of the
Outcomes different natural resources of the planet
• Raise awareness on the different
environmental issues in the present world.
Earth's Natural Resources

Outline
Global and Regional
Environmental Problems
Earth's Natural
Resources

• Natural resources are

commodities that are
considered valuable in their
natural form (wwf.panda.org)
• Could either be renewable or
non-renewable
• Resources are important to
any country's development
What are Nonrenewable
Resources?

• Nonrenewable resources are materials

present in fixed amounts in the
environment that can no longer be
tapped once the available stock at a
site is exhausted
• Minerals, metals, and fossil fuels
• Account for about 90 percent of the
world's energy consumption
What are Renewable
Resources?

• Renewable resources are things that

can be replenished or replaced.
(ecofriendlykids.co.uk)
• Living organisms, fresh water,
soil, sunlight
• have the advantage of producing lower
emissions of carbon dioxide, and
reducing reliance on fossil fuels
How Can We Use
the Earth's Natural
Resources at Home
effectively and
efficiently?
What are the Major
Global and Regional
Environmental Problems?

• Water Pollution
• Air Pollution
• Solid and Hazardous Waste
• Deforestation
• Biodiversity Loss
• Global Climate Change
• Stratospheric Ozone
Depletion
Water Pollution
• Water pollution occurs when harmful substances—often chemicals or microorganisms—
contaminate a stream, river, lake, ocean, aquifer, or other body of water, degrading
water quality and rendering it toxic to humans or the environment.
Air Pollution
• Air pollution is a mix of particles and gases that can reach harmful concentrations both
outside and indoors.
• Soot, smoke, mold, pollen, methane, and carbon dioxide are a just few examples of
common pollutants.
Solid and Hazardous Waste
• “Solid Waste” means any garbage or refuse, sludge or other discarded material,
resulting from industrial, commercial, mining, and agricultural operations, and from
community activities
• A solid waste is a hazardous waste if it exhibit any one or more of the following
characteristic properties: ignitability, corrosivity, reactivity or toxicity.
Deforestation
• Deforestation is the permanent removal of trees to make room for something besides
forest
• Worldwide, forests provide 13.4 million people with jobs in the forest sector, and
another 41 million people have jobs related to forests
• Today, most deforestation is happening in the tropics
Biodiversity Loss
• It is believed that the Earth has experienced five mass extinctions in its history but the
crucial difference is that this time the threat is being caused by humans
• Since 1970 alone, vertebrate populations have fallen by 40 per cent for land-based
species, 84 per cent for freshwater species and 35 per cent for marine species
Global Climate Change
• Climate change refers to significant, long-term changes in the global climate
• Global warming, which is the slow increase in the average temperature of the earth’s
atmosphere, is one of the main drivers of climate change
Stratospheric Ozone Depletion
• During the 1970s it was realised that man-made emissions of CFCs and other
chemicals used in refrigeration, aerosols and cleansing agents may cause a significant
destruction of ozone in the stratosphere, thereby letting through more of the harmful
ultraviolet radiation.
• Then in 1985, evidence of a large "ozone hole" was discovered above the continent of
Antarctica during the springtime.
How can we
Alleviate the
Impacts of These
Problems in Our
Own Way?
"I don't want to protect the environment, i want to
create a world where the environment doesn't
need protecting."
