RIDING IN THE COLD
Depending on where you live in Florida and what type of
“Cold Front” you are experiencing that day will deter-
mine whether or not you are going to ride. If you are
going to ride, here are a few things to consider for your
safety. Let’s first look at the physical effects to your body
when it is cold. Your reaction movements are slowed
down due to your muscles and joints being colder and
your finger movement being restricted due to possibly
arthritis or just by thicker gloves. If your body tempera-
ture gets too cold this can also slow your thinking proc-
ess, which will slow down your reaction time.
What can we do to keep warm? The obvious answer is to
dress appropriately to cut down on the “Wind Chill Fac-
tor”. “Wind Chill Factor” is the cold wind passing by your
body and lowering you body temperature with air tem-
perature lower than the actual outside air temperature. I
have included a “Wind Chill Factor Chart” to this article.
As you look at the Chart, you will see on the Left Side the
“Speed of the Wind”. When you are riding a motorcycle,
“You” are the “Speed of the Wind” added to any existing
“Head Wind Speed”. For illustration purposes let’s look
at the Left Side of the Chart at a Wind Speed of 55mph.
That represents you traveling at 55mph creating your
own Wind Speed. Now, let’s look at the Top of the Chart
at go down to 45 degrees. (A temperature that could
easily be happening on a cold Florida morning.) The Chart
shows that the “Wind Chill” temperature would be 32

degrees. 32 degrees is a freezing temperature on you,
although the actual outside temperature is only 45 de-
grees.
Dressing appropriately means knowing what to wear and
what works. “Thermal Underwear” is a big help.
“Electric Underwear” is even better. Electric Underwear
plugs into you motorcycle and has a dial controlled ther-
mostat to regulate the temperature like a heating blan-
ket. Electric Underwear pieces include: socks, pant liner,
jacket liner and gloves. You must wear appropriate
outerwear to block cold air from penetrating through
your cloths to keep the warmth in.
The design of your motorcycle can also serve to help
keep the cold wind off of you. A windshield, upper and
lower fairing, and wind deflectors can help keep you
warm. If you do not have a lower fairing, “Chaps” can
help keep the cold wind directly off of your legs. A rain
suit can also be utilized to cut down on the cold wind
passing through your motorcycle clothing. A thin rain
jacket can be worn under your motorcycle jacket and
rain pants can be worn over your motorcycle pants to
cut down on the cold air passing through your clothing.
The cold weather is here. Prepare to properly deal with
it to keep yourself warm and alert.
