Membrane Worksheet

1. Correctly identify the different components of the lipid bilayer found below.

__A__ Phospholipids
__B__ Integral protein
__E__ Glycolipids
__F__ Fatty acid tails
__G__ Phosphate heads
__H__ Peripheral protein
__I__ Cholesterol
__C__ Glycoprotein

2. In the diagram above, label the extracellular and intracellular side of this membrane.
Outside = where “C” is and inside where “G” is
3. Using the same diagram as above, match the cell membrane component to their function or
characteristics. Some letters may be used more than once and there may be more than one
correct answer.
A, B, I Is amphipathic
I Acts as a fluidity buffer for the membrane
B Can transport molecules, such as Na+ or K+, across the membrane.
C, E Involved in cell-cell recognition
H Weakly associated with the membrane.

4. Below is a beaker separated by a membrane. The concentration of the solute is not the
same on both side of the beaker.

a. What would you expect to happen if the membrane was

permeable to the solute? What is the name of this process?
The solute would diffuse through the membrane from high concentration of
solute to low until an equilibrium was reached. Process is diffusion.
b. What would you expect to happen if the membrane was
permeable to the solvent, but not the solute. What is the name of
this process?
The solvent would go through the membrane from the side of low solute
concentration to high solute concentration. This process is known as osmosis.
c. Does either process named in a or b require energy?
No they are both example of passive transport.

5. Put an “X” to indicate which statements apply which types of transport. A statement can
have multiple correct answers.

Primary Secondary
Diffusion Osmosis active active
transport transport
A substance moves from an area of high
x (x)
concentration to an area of low concentration.
Can happen in living cells. x x x x
Requires chemical energy, such as photons or
x
ATP.
The movement of a substance evens out the
x x
concentrations on both side of the membrane.
The movement is caused by the random
x x
movement of individual particles.
Molecules move against their concentration
x x
gradient.
Only water is involved in this type of
x
movement.
This movement requires energy. x x
Uses electrochemical gradients as a source of
x
energy.

6. Number the following steps of the Na+/K+ pump in order in which they occur.

__2___ __4___ __1___

__3___ __6___ __5___

7. Using the top left picture above, label the following components.
a. Extracellular matrix blue side c. High [Na+], low [K+] blue side
b. Cytosol yellow side d. Low [Na+], high [K+] yellow side
