Hatch Open Test
Hatch Open
1.- HMN 6.3 coil is selected:
2.- Coil is identified and placed into FBP loading area (Exhibit 2)
3.-Hatch Open test is performed: (Exhibit 3)
Test details:
1st Test; Hatch opened for 1 min
2nd Test; Hacth opened 5 min
3rd Test; Hatch opened 10 minutes
4.- Procedure:
4.1.- The coil goes into the furnace in line 10 of FBP, the remaining lines are Dummy material.
4.2.- With a file, a mark is made on the wire to indicate the beginning of the tests.
4.3.- All the tests were started at standard material speed.
4.4.- When the mark enters the FBP furnace, the furnace´s hatch is opened.
4.5.- The first test is left open for 1 minute, the second for 5 minutes, the third for 10 minutes.
4.6.-The dew point was monitored throughout the procedure (Exhibit 4).
The area of the wire to be analyzed is as follows:
- For 1 minute: 4 mts
- For 5 minutes: 20 mts
- For 10 minutes: 40 mts
4.7.- Test specimens are prepared for metallographic analysis of microstructure (3 samples per specimen).
(Exhibit 1)
5.- Results:
The specimens do not show decarburization after tests
No significant change in dew point is perceived in any of the 3 tests.

Exhibit 3
Exhibit 4
First Test - Hatch Open 1 min.
Test 1 - 500X Test 2 - 500X

Test 3 - 500X Conclusions

According to evidence shown in specimens for

metallographic analysis, the material does not show
decarburization, therefore, the 1 minute open hatch is
not a determining factor for decarburization.
Second Test - Hatch Open 5 min.
Test 1 - 500X Test 2 - 500X

Test 3 - 500X Conclusions

According to evidence shown in specimens for

metallographic analysis, the material does not show
decarburization, therefore, the 5 min. open hatch is not
a determining factor for decarburization.
Third Test - Hatch Open 10 min.
Test 1 - 500X Test 2 - 500X

Test 3 - 500X Conclusions

According to evidence shown in specimens for

metallographic analysis, the material does not show
decarburization, therefore, the 10 min. open hatch is
not a determining factor for decarburization.
Water Test
WaterTest
1.- HMN 6.3 coil is selected:
2.- Coil is identified and placed into FBP loading area (Exhibit 3)
3.-Expose steel to water in a determined length of material (2 mts) :
4.- Test details:
Material shall be exposed to water prior to entry into the FBP furnace through a sprayer.
Water will be sprayed onto the wire surface in a defined length of material (2 mts).
Dew point should be monitored to observe if there is any change.

5.1.- Procedure
5.1.- The coil goes into the furnace in line 10 of FBP, the remaining lines are Dummy material.
5.2.- With a file, a mark is made on the wire to indicate the beginning of the tests. (Exhibit 3)
5.3.- All the tests were started at standard material speed
5.4- When the mark enters the FBP furnace, water is added to the marked zone. (Exhibit 1).
5.5.-The dew point was monitored throughout the procedure.
5.6.- Test specimens are prepared for metallographic analysis of microstructure (3 samples per specimen).
(Exhibit 2)
6.- Results:
Decarburization within the tolerance was observed in the samples. (Remarks)
Exhibit 2 (Water)

Remarks:
Decarburization tolerance on selected diameter: 31.5 µm
Decarburization found in diameter: 20.44 µm
There´s no Decarburization in the sample before test

Air Test
Air Test
1.- HMN 6.3 coil is selected:
2.- Coil is identified and placed into FBP loading area (Exhibit 3)
3.- Expose steel to air in a determined length of material (4 mts) :
4.- Test details:
Material will be exposed to air at the entrance to the FBP furnace through compressed air,
generating a mixed atmosphere (air and nitrogen)
Air will be added to the material in a defined length of material (4 mts).
Dew point should be monitored to observe if there is any change.
5.- Procedure
5.1.- The coil goes into the furnace in line 10 of FBP, the remaining lines are Dummy material.
5.2.- With a file, a mark is made on the wire to indicate the beginning of the tests.
5.3.- The tests was started at standard material speed.
5.4.- When the mark enters the FBP furnace, air is added in zone A (above line 10 of FBP).
5.5.-The dew point was monitored throughout the procedure.
5.6.- Test specimens are prepared for metallographic analysis of microstructure (3 samples per specimen).

Results:
Decarburization presence within the tolerance was observed in the sample (20.84µm)
Exhibit 1 (Air)

Remarks:
Decarburization tolerance on selected diameter: 31.5 µm
Decarburization found in diameter: 20.84 µm

Rust Test
Rust test
1.- HMN 6.3 coil with rust is selected:
2.- Coil is identified and placed into FBP loading area (Exhibit 2)
3.- Rusted coil, passed to FBP to verify the depth of rust after the process & decarburization
4.- Test details:
There are two targets in this test; determinate if rust are a decarburization factor and the depth of rust in material after FBP.
Material rusted must be selected from quiarentine area
The coil must not show decarburization
5.- Procedure:
5.1.- The coil goes into the furnace in line 10 of FBP, the remaining lines are Dummy material.
5.2.- With a file, a mark is made on the wire to indicate the beginning of the tests. (Exhibit 2)
5.3.- All the tests were started at standard material speed.
5.4.- Cutting of 2 mts of the material after FBP to verify microstructure.
5.5.- Test specimens are prepared for metallographic analysis of microstructure (3 samples per specimen).

Results:
The rust depth generated a pit by the FBP process, from 7µm to 18µm. (Remarks) (Exhibit 1)
Decarburization presence within the tolerance was observed in the sample (26.77µm) (Exhibit 3)
Exhibit 1 (Rust)

Remarks:
Before FBP process the rust depth of the material was 7.6 µm.
There´s no Decarburization in the sample before test
After FBP process the rust depth contained in the material shows a depth of 18.74µm.
Decarburization presence After test was within the tolerance (26.77µm)
