Youth Leadership Programme (YLP)

Framework 2020 - 2021

Kindergarten to Year 6

The Next Generation (TNG) school strives to bring out the leader in each student through
quality education and empowerment. Staying true to the spirit of the school’s mission
and vision, Student Affairs and Communication is pleased to share the framework for
Youth Leadership Programme (YLP) 2020 - 2021.

Programme Theme 2020 - 2021

The theme for Kindergarten to Year 6 for this year will be: ‘Explorers & Investigators.’

Project Idea

The focus for this year’s YLP will be investigative or research-based learning. Through this
exercise, teachers must encourage their students to look at the world around them,
make observations and ask critical questions. Then, use research and investigative-based
learning to find answers to their questions.

Each class will pick a theme, which the teacher must finalise in collaboration with her
students. Within each theme, students will finalise what aspect/topic they wish to
explore further. It can either be a big idea or a critical question.

Teachers are advised to help students select themes that would also allow them to look
at the world from a global perspective.

Here are a few examples:

While designing their YLP project on farming last year, KG students looked at the
following big ideas/questions:

• How did the blockade affect Qatar's food production and farming?
• What is the future of farming in Qatar?
• Can Qatar become self- sufficient in producing milk and dairy products in the future?
• How does climate affect farming?
• Why is organic food considered healthier than other foods?

Or while investigating climate change, year I students undertook research on the

following questions:

• How do we know the climate is changing?

• Why are we letting this happen? How can we help?
• How do we know humans are causing global warming?
• How has global warming affected the world so far?
• What impact can global warming have on our future?

Process & Presentation of YLP Projects

Once the big idea/critical question has been finalised with each child, the research phase
will begin. Teachers must use appropriate resources to support students in finding
answers to their questions.

Students may choose to work in pairs for this exercise. However, later the work has to be
presented separately by each child.

Using their findings, student will prepare a short presentation of what they learned.
Students can choose to present their findings in any format. However, they should be
able to clearly articulate their topic, what they learned and how they learned it.

Teachers are advised to play on their students’ strengths while deciding on the format of
the presentation.

Important: Campus Heads are requested to assign a co-teacher to each class, who will
support the class teacher in preparing the students of her class. There is no need to
assign co-teachers to KG classes as they already have assistant teachers.
