Females

An adult female member of a household may have the role of wife


or mother or both. As a wife she would have a responsibil ity to love,
cherish and care for her husband. As a mother she would have a
• responsibility to love, care for and socialise her children and be largely
responsible for childrearing. She may also earn an income to help
satisfy the economic needs of the family.
Traditionally, the main roles of women have been seen as those
below.
• Caregiver. In giving care, a person shows concern for another and
seeks to ensure the other person's safety and wellbeing, perhaps
offering protection from those th1ngs that might harm. In a family
situation, meetmg phys1cal needs, largely through preparing and
cooking meals, and offering emotional and psychological support
would be part of this.
• Soc1a lising agent. Socialisation is about helping people to become
members of society. Part of this 1s teachmg children about

• Economic provider. Although not a mam breadwinner, a woman


would have been expected to produce food from a backyard
garden or to make 1tems of art and craft, either for use in the
house or for sa le.
• Homemaker. In homemak;ng, a person IS responsible for creatmg a
pleasant home env1ronment. A large part of this involves keeping a
dwelling clean and tidy.
.. • Counsellor. As counsellor, a woman would be responsible for
meetmg emotional and psychological needs as well as considering
relig1ous aspects of l1fe.

Carry out a survey among members of your class to establish how


far the traditional male and female roles are reflected in different
households. What do your findings show about the extent to
which these traditional roles apply 1n famil1es in your community?
