“Appreciating Cultural Differences”

Every person in a particular society has their own culture that is often different from

other societies. This is a long-term element that people adapt and learned from what society

they lived in. Cultural differences make a person unique from another person because they

have their own behaviors, languages, and beliefs. Whenever a person flew from his society to a

new one, he will still carry this element and should become his consideration in starting a new

life in that new society.

I will consider the cultural differences before I work or study far away from my own

country because these differences can lead to misunderstanding due to a lack of cultural

knowledge of that new country. Like if the language of that country is unfamiliar to me, it may

lead me to a misinterpretation that will become a barricade whenever I will communicate with

them. I may also do something that may confuse or offend them because it is prohibited to do.

Considering our differences can help me to become more aware of the actions and behaviors

that I will be doing whenever I will communicate with others without confusion and become

confident and comfortable mingling. This will lead me to build a good connection or

relationship with them. Also, I should have created some strategies in order to fulfill a much

better situation in the new country in which I will live. Observe, communicate, and appreciate

are the three strategies that can help me to avoid misinterpretation and adapt to their new

environment.

Observing can be an important aspect of learning because it won’t only helps me to see

the actions that I should know or I should be doing but also I can create a much easier way to

adapt them to myself. When I politely observe their behaviors and actions towards a thing or a

person, I can find out more about their own culture aside from what I have learned through

searching it on the internet. Through these observations, I can now achieve proper

communication with them. The second strategy is to communicate, aside from learning their
own language; I can also communicate with them by using the universal language. If ever they

didn’t know this language, I should become creative in making some ways to communicate

with them. Whenever I will verbally communicate to them and I didn’t know how to express

the message due to a lack of language knowledge, I will say it along with non-verbal actions to

support the message that I want to say to avoid further miscommunication. The last one is to

appreciate one’s own culture just like how I appreciate mine. It might be hard for me to adapt to

this new environment but I should still do my best to also learn about their own culture like

how I learned mine from the start. Appreciating one’s culture can help me to gain a wider

knowledge about their behaviors, beliefs, and language. For some reason, it is not just how

much you need to learn that culture of a particular society for you to adopt but it’s how

interested you will become in learning their culture.
