Reflection notes in ETOS

Assessing learners’ progress is one of the most important tasks that a teacher does in the school.
Evaluating learners should not be done in a blink of an eye because preparations are needed to be
done beforehand. One of the modes of assessments is the quarterly assessment. Every quarter,
teachers prepare their test questions. In preparing such, table of specification is needed.
Traditionally, our school uses the old style of doing the TOS and identifying the least mastered
competencies. However, this school year, starting from the 3 rd quarter, our mentors have
introduced a new way of preparing the table of specification or the so-called Modified Electronic
Table of Specification. In this new METOS, we are required to provide the competencies with
their codes, the number of teaching hours, the number of items, and the item placements.

This is very helpful on the part of the teachers because of some reasons. First, we are able to
monitor the development of learning of the students for the whole quarter. Second, we are able to
identify the least mastered competency by the students so that we would be able to give
remediation and enhancements to the learners. Third, we are able to give justification that the test
we are administering to the students are actually based on the actual lessons that we conducted
and therefore it is valid and reliable. Lastly, I believe that this METOS is helpful in attaining the
mission and vision of the department which is to provide quality education to the learners.

Having mentioned these, I can say that the ETOS is really helpful for us teachers. I am thankful
that the utilization of this material have been discussed to us by our master teacher during our
LAC Session. I am hoping for more helpful materials to be introduced to us in the coming years.
Reflection on Reading month

Based on the result of the Program of International Student Assessment (PISA) in 2018, there
has been a declination in the students’ performance when it comes to reading. It has been evident
even in the school levels because there has been evidence of identified non-readers in different
grade levels. Although the department of education has been exhausting all means to aide this
problem, it is evident that it is not enough. In our school, there is a number of identified non-
readers based on the assessment made.

During this school year, another program has been implemented in the school; the reading
program. This is a program initiated by the language teachers to eradicate the identified problem
in reading among the students. Language teachers are encouraged to integrate more reading
activities in their lessons to enhance the reading comprehension levels of students.

In my lessons, I integrated reading since I teach language subjects. I let the students read texts
related to our topic. I also do group reading, oral reading, and print and digital reading activities.
To enhance their reading comprehension level, I give guide questions so that they could look for
the answers as they read the text. At the end of the activity, I feel accomplished since I see that
they read the texts and came up with answers to the questions.

These are the activities that I did to implement the reading program of the school. I can say that
this program is helpful for the learners and the teachers. I hope that this program will be
implemented again next school year.
