A reflection on a year of
a pandemic and EU-Exit
Welcome to the latest Composites UK Membership Directory, kindly produced by our
lead press partners, Composites in Manufacturing magazine.

The past year has been a tough and busy one for us as we’ve worked hard to provide vital
support to our member companies, navigating the pandemic and EU-Exit.
We made sure members were kept up-to-date with information relevant to them throughout the
pandemic by laying out government guidelines in easy-to-digest e-bulletins, and provided
checklists for members to ensure they could work safely during these times. We offered flexible
payment options to members to assist with their cashflow so that they could remain members
and benefit from our support during the pandemic.
We produced guidelines for members around the EU-Exit to prepare them for the steps they
needed to put in place to continue to import and export. We are now assisting the Trade
Remedies Agency with reviews on imported goods relevant to our sector. The EU-Exit brought

legislative changes, which our Material Suppliers Sub-Group continue to review in order to prepare
Chief Executive Officer, guidance and support for the whole supply chain.
Composites UK Our focus on health and safety for the industry continued and we were delighted to receive a
record number of accident report forms from members that we compile on an annual basis.
Our Construction Sector Group joined the Construction Products Association (CPA), supporting
members already in, or looking to move into the construction sector and helping them prepare for
Net-Zero. This will give us additional technical and sustainability support as well as improved
connection with the construction industry to demonstrate how composites can be used in
buildings and infrastructure.
In terms of skills, we began redesigning the Composites Assured Practitioner Scheme (CAP) to
help our members prepare for technology changes and identify training needs. We also facilitated
the Kickstart Scheme for our industry, a government initiative providing funding to create new jobs
for 16- to 24-year-olds on Universal Credit who are at risk of long-term unemployment.
We were excited to win funding for the PRoGreSS project - Products from Recycled Glass fibre
at Economic and Sustainable Scale – which would have a massive positive impact on the GRP
sector. Unfortunately, the lead partner pulled out due to the impact of the pandemic. However, we
have found a new lead partner, reconfigured the consortium and resubmitted the proposal in
August 2021.
With the pandemic saw natural changes in the way we run events. We transferred our whole
programme online and found a way not just to host presentations on a screen, but to also include
networking elements where delegates can sit on virtual tables and talk to others as if they were in
a room together. This hasn’t stopped us looking ahead to future face-to-face events, including the
creation of the International Composites Summit, co-organised with Fluency Marketing, which is a
two-day exhibition stemming from a response to members requesting a composite focused show.
JEC and the European Composite Industry Association (EuCIA) are supporting this event and will
be hosting their Global Meeting of Trade Associations on the first day of the show, bringing
international companies to the stage.
A reshuffle of focus at the Department of International Trade has meant we have become the
organisers of the UK Pavilion at JEC World 2022. Having been involved with the organisation of
the Pavilion for over a decade, and knowing the UK composites industry as we do, we were the
natural choice to take this on.
All of the above is in addition to the day-to-day support we provide. As a small team of seven
we are dedicated to providing the very best support to our members.

Blackman & White is a 57-year strong manufacturing, sales, training and service centre for
knife, rotary, laser and router CNC finishing tables. Based in Maldon, Essex they witnessed
agrowing trend of new customers reaching out for support during lockdown. With supply
chains buckling, Blackman & White’s strength of UK manufacturing proved valuable to their
customers. As a by-product, the company saw growth to a multisite operation that shows
no sign of slowing down.
How has your diversity of products helped your customers?
Our current customer base has always been centred around textiles, with the existing team
we knew how to build the best CNC cutting table on the market. With some new faces
working with us fresh and innovative ideas came to the business, we soon found a plethora
of applications paired with industries keen to work with us on supplying production worthy
equipment. We can now produce 5-meter wide static or conveyor tables
and for the applications which require a flatbed
approach, we have made machines over 30 meters long
for bespoke projects. Our tooling range is now fully adaptable
and future proof making upgrades and tool
changes simple and cost-effective.

What does the future hold

for Blackman & White?
We have found a winning recipe
within the UK which we plan to grow
and establish further. The next big step
for us is setting up a new premises and
team overseas.

What's the biggest challenge your business has

faced to recently?
The biggest challenge is also our proudest achievement, the decision to move
training and demonstrations to a separate building from manufacturing is one that we
deliberated for years. Our hand was finally forced due to the need to demonstrate the
diversity of our systems. As manufacturing increased, we simply ran out of space to
showcase our machine ranges as well as manufacturing new tables for our clients.
The challenge we faced was retaining our family-run team during the transition. With a
new CRM/MRP system and the promotion of internal staff to key leaders, we now have a
working system which allows us to be more efficient and productive in separate locations.

PRF Composite Materials is a leading manufacturer and
supplier of high-performance materials for the advanced
composites industry, with a comprehensive range of
products available from stock: prepreg (tooling and
component), reinforcements, epoxy resin systems,
release agents and kitting services. With over 35 years’
experience supplying the aerospace, motorsport,
renewable energy, defence, sports & leisure, medical and
marine industries, we are passionate about innovative
product development and working with our customers to
achieve a solution that works on all levels: technical
requirements, manufacturing, budget and timescale.
In 2021, PRF has completed an investment and expansion
programme of approaching £6 million, significantly increasing
manufacturing and R&D capacity and capability, and opening
the company’s fourth factory in August 2021. This state-of-
the-art, purpose-built 14,700sq. ft manufacturing site brings
material processing for kitting into a single, controlled
environment, increasing manufacturing efficiency and helping
PRF to minimise the impact of excessive price increases seen
across the industry.
This new facility increases PRF’s total factory space to
40,000sq. ft and will make space in our other sites for further
R&D and manufacturing expansion. In 2020 and 2021, the
team have been busy investing and improving in R&D, with a
complete upgrade of test equipment in both the chemical and
material testing laboratories, thereby opening the door for
new product development and technologies. We have also
increased freezer storage space to 735m3, and installed an
additional CNC machine and a third impregnation line. With
sustainability in mind, the new site has been built with eco-
efficient fixtures and fittings, including a PV system which
generates 29,965 kw of electricity a year, saving 16,676kg of
carbon dioxide.
