III. THE SCOUT HANDSHAKE, SCOUT SIGN, AND SCOUT SALUTE.

THE SCOUT HANDSHAKE

The left-handed Scout

handshake is a formal way of greeting other Scouts of both genders and is used by members of Scout
and Guide organizations around the world. The handshake is made with the hand nearest to the heart
and is offered as a token of friendship. In most situations, the handshake is made firmly, without
interlocking fingers, and many organizations only use this handshake when both people are in uniform.
There are some variations of the handshake between national Scouting organizations and also within
some program sections.

HISTORY OF THE SCOUT HANDSHAKE

When Colonel Baden-Powell entered the capital city of the Ashanti people in 1890 he was met by one of
the Chiefs who came to him holding out his left hand. B.-P. held out his right in return but the Chief said:
"No, in my country the bravest of the brave shake with the left hand." So began the "left handshake" of
the world-wide brotherhood of Scouts. In this book are told some of the stories of courage and endurance
shown by Scouts in many different countries during the war of 1939–45. There would not be room even in
many books to tell them all. Many, indeed, can never be told; some for political reasons, some because
the actors died unknown. They remembered their Promise, to do their best to do their duty to God, and
their Country; to think of other people and not themselves. So, when the time came, they were prepared
in body and in spirit to render their service. Their record is unsurpassed; they were "the bravest of the
brave."

THE SCOUT SIGN

The Scout Sign is made the right hand. The three middle fingers are held upright joined together to
symbolize the three promises in the Scout Oath. The hollow circle formed by the position of the thumb
and little finger symbolizes the World Brotherhood of Scouts

THE SCOUT SALUTE

The Scout Salute is made with the lip of the point finger of the right hand in a Scout sign touching, the tip
of the right eyebrow in the manner of a Salute. It is made as a sign of respect and recognition to both Boy
Scouts and Adult Scout Leaders and when Saluting the Flag.

IV. THE SCOUT BADGE AND SENIOR SCOUT EMBLEM.

THE SENIOR SCOUT EMBLEM

The Senior Scout Emblem represents all that Senior Scouting stands for the red double letter S
embossed in a field of gold and represented as a winding road leading to the distant horizon symbolizes
the exciting oudoor trails of life which a Senior Scout must takein an adventurefilled journey to good
citizenship. The Golden field upon the double S is plain symbolizes those Golden

values that every Senior Scout must strive to possess as he goes through life. The Trefoil on the emblem
reminds him that, as a Senior Scoutm he belongs to a world-wide Brotherhood of young people
committed to a life of selfless service to God, Country and Fellowmen.

· The Sun as a whole represents Liberty and Freedom. The 8 rays of the sun represents the first 8 provinces
(Manila, Bulacan, Pampanga, Batangas, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, Cavite and Laguna) that fought against the Spanish
Rule.

· The color Red represents Courage, Bravery, Heroism, for the blood of those who died for our country while the
color Blue stands for Peace, Justice and Noble Ideas. The color White stands for Purity and the Equilateral Triangle
based on the hoist side represents Equality.

· The Single Band in the trefoil means World Brotherhood.

· The Scroll is like the mouth of a smiling scout, showing that a Scout is Cheerful. The Scout Motto is written in the
Scroll.

LUPANG HINIRANG

Tagumpay na nagniningning;

Ang bituin at araw niya

Kailan pa ma'y di magdidilim.

Lupa ng araw, ng luwalhati't pagsinta,

Buhay ay langit sa piling mo;

Aming ligaya na pag may mang-aapi

Ang mamatay nang dahil sa iyo.
