Rainforests - flora
• Availability of abundant water and sunlight helps the plants to grow well in
the region. So thick forests grow here.
• The Amazon forests are in fact so thick that the dense ‘roof’ created by leaves
and branches does not allow the sunlight to reach the ground.
• The ground remains dark and damp. Only shade tolerant vegetation may
grow on the ground. Orchids, bromeliads grow as plant parasites.

PEOPLE
• People living in the rainforests, clear a small area and do
the farming.
• While men hunt and fish along the rivers, women take
care of the crops.
• Tapioca, pineapple and sweet potato are some of the
crops grown here.
• ‘Slash and burn agriculture’ is practiced here.
• The staple food is manioc, which is also known as cassava.
It grows under the ground like the potato.
• People here eat queen ants and egg sacs.
• Cash crops like coffee, maize and cocoa are also grown
here.

Houses

• Most of the houses are made of

wood, since rainforests provide
plenty of wood.
• Some families live in thatched
houses shaped like beehives.
• There are other large apartment-like
houses called ‘Maloca’ with a steeply
slanting roof.
