THE AMAZON BASIN 

The Largest river Basin in the world is the


amazon basin in South America. It is the
world's thickest and largest Tropical
evergreen Forest .It's present in places
like- Peru, Brazil, Ecuador and Columbia.
Next to river Nile, Amazon river is the
2nd longest river.

The climate here is hot


and Humid . This area
receives heavy Rainfall
throughout  the year due
to its location near the
equator
Flora Of Amazon
 The Amazon basin is known
for its RAINFORESTS
  There are several layers of
vegetation and also they are tall
and thick 
 The topmost layer of foliage is
known as CANOPY.   
 After the canopy Layer, there are two more layers
present here.
 These forest are so dense that sunlight hardly
reaches the Grounds 
 This regions has may types of plant like-
Cinchona, Brazil nut and Quebracho 
Amazon wildlife

In amazon there is a variety of


wildlife .In amazon most of the
animals are arboreal(adapted
to living on trees).some of
them are apes and lemurs.
Reptiles and amphibians such
as snakes, lizards and frogs
are also found here. Colourful
birds and butterflies are also
common.
Amazon vegetation 
The most important food crop
is manioc or cassava. The
other crops which are found
here are coffee, maize,
cocoa, Brazil nut, etc.

Migration 
1. People migrated from Europe to South America or Amazon
basin .
2.Many rainforests have been cleared for various purposes in
the past few decades due to the increase in the population 
3. Amazon is being inhabited due to economic potential.
4. Big forest areas were cleared for constructing roads and
setting up camp areas ( lumbering camps)
Ganga-Brahmaputra Basin

The Ganga is the major river of the


Indian Sub-continent.
The two big rivers of India are Ganga
and Brahmaputra .
Ganga and Brahmaputra join together
in Bangladesh and form the world's
largest delta, known as Ganga-
Brahmaputra Delta.
Ganga-Brahmaputra basin is the
part of the northern plains of the
Indian sub-continent.

It lies to the south of the foothills of


i the Shivalik. i

It is a vast low-lying plain, covering


a distance of about 2,500 km.
The Geography Of The
Ganga Brahmaputra Basin
    This plain is drained by the three big rivers of India-
The Indus, The Ganga and The Brahmaputra. The fine
alluvial is deposited here.

The streams of the rivers form a network of water


channels and drain into the Bay Bengal.

The northern plains include the states of Haryana,


Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and Assam.

 Climate- 
       Hot and Humid

 Rainfall-  i
      Heavy rainfall, mainly concentrated during three 
      months of the monsoon.
      Average rainfall - about 200 cm.

 Forest- 
     The basin is covered with tropical deciduous forests.
     The area is now converted into farms & settlements.
Sunder ban Delta
• The Lowest part of the Ganga delta is covered with
Mangrove forests.

• These forests are dominated by a plant species locally


known as Sundari.

• Thus, this area is named as Sunder ban 

• The soil of Ganga-Brahmaputra Basin is very Fertile


and suitable for cultivation of crops 

• Eg: Wheat, Rice, Sugarcane, Jute, Tea.


Development of Places near the Riverbank 
 Many Cities are Located near or on the riverbanks.
EXAMPLES-Allahabad, Varanasi, Patna, Guwahati.

 These cities are developing at a very fast rate.

 This is because of abundance of water and fertile soil


which helps flora and fauna to flourish.

 Argo-based industries like textile and sugar are common in


this region.
