ASSIGNMENT NO.: 1/6 Course Name: MANUFACTURING PROCESSES-2 (ME323) Branch & Section: MECHANICAL ENGINEERING (Section: M1/M2/M3) Max. Marks: 05 Assignment uploading date: Due Date: One Week after Completion of Unit I
Q.1: As a productivity improvement head of an Indian automotive parts mass
manufacturing industry, you have been assigned to propose the most upgraded machining & turning centers for the aluminum alloy components machine shop. The top management prefers to buy these machines from an Indian machine tools manufacturer than foreign make. Considering above given conditions, take any automotive part(s) of your choice and accordingly search for any five manufacturers, and prepare a comprehensive comparative table indicating the capabilities, sizes, power, and costs (if available) of machining and turning centers. Give comments on your decision that must be acceptable to the top management. [This is open ended question, which can have multiple solutions and students are advised to use online websites/search engine].
Q.2: How do subtractive and additive manufacturing processes impact the
production, design, and material usage in various industries? Support your answer with an example of an industrial product.
Q.3: A component is being produced using a subtractive process but same
component can also be produced using an additive process. The cost data for the two processes is given in the following table. If it is assumed that the component performance is not affected whether it is produced by subtractive process or additive process, determine the following: I. Which process should be employed if the number of parts required is 100,000? II. What quantity of production will make both subtractive process and additive process equally economical? Types of Costs Subtractive process Additive process Manufacturing cost (Rs.) 750,000 1000,000 Tooling cost (Rs.) 22,000 8,000 Material Cost (Rs.) 15 20 Labour Cost (Rs.) 25 30 Power Cost (Rs.) 10 20 State the assumptions made, if any.
Q.4: How do cutting parameters impact the overall efficiency and quality of the machining operations?
Q.5: A mass manufacturing industry is producing 24,000 components per months
by engaging 100 workmen per shift. Suddenly, industry receives urgent demand to produce additional 6000 components. The top management plans to employ additional workers. Take 8 hours per shift. Assume any data, if missing. What will be the production and productivity level when the numbers of additional engaged workmen are (i) 30, (ii) 25, and (iii) 20. Interpret the results in your words as production engineer.
