Global Governance: Brains over power

Global governance is similar to state governance, where there is a sum of laws,

policies, norms, and institutions to control and rule. Global governance has no central

authority. Moreover, there is no such thing as a worldwide government because every

nation-state has sovereignty and power over its own. Global governance establishes

interdependence and relations between countries, but it will never give powers to one

country to exercise its supremacy upon others (Video Lecture on Global Governance,

2020). Nation-states is one of the global governance actors, and its government

controls their interdependence with other countries.

One way the Philippines can do is to improve the access and quality of Education

for everyone because Education is the key to good quality of life. Even before the

pandemic, not many children could attend school, and there were even adults who

could not earn sufficient money because they would be deemed underqualified for

higher-paying jobs. In January 2020, 16.9 percent of people were out of school youth. In

2021, 23.7 percent of Filipinos are poor (Philippine Statistics Authority, 2021). Lack of

Education is the leading cause of poverty. Other problems such One basic solution is to

provide educational resources to every student.

Furthermore, Education contributes to the innovation and development of the

country. And countries like South Korea have proven that their achievement of being a

developed country was caused by one of the factors, Education. A college education,
especially in STEM programs, is deemed necessary to reach financial and economic

success to qualify for a career (Explained with DOM, 2022). The commitment to making

Education open to everyone caused South Korea to be one of the most educated

countries, producing qualified workers. And as the problem of Education continues to

fade, poverty will be mitigated, and more workers will enter the economy. Moreover, the

country will continue to be qualified to participate in global governance.

And the last thing that the present Philippine government needs to do is to

involve scientists in policymaking. Despite the power of politics, we need the potential of

science and technology to discover new things and innovate the future. The problem

with science has been observable as we depend on other countries to provide us with

products and services such as vaccines, gadgets, automobiles, televisions, and many

more. From a scientist’s personal experience, an experiment would take three months,

and the cost for the research is three to twenty times more than in other countries.

Moreover, the Philippine government had fixed its priorities for other issues, and some

note that the 364 million pesos spent on the artificial beach could have been given for a

decade’s worth of marine science research (Liwag,2020). The fields of science and

study need to be valued because they lead the world by bringing worldwide revolution

and making informed decisions.

Improving the quality and access of education and funding research institutions

and academic communities for their innovative pursuits emphasize the need for
educated and talented minds0 to lead, especially in global governance. And it also

underscores the worth for everyone to be allowed to study and work. Thus, there is no

such thing as dead weight because unemployed and uneducated people are not as

privileged as others. And the second way values the importance of scientists because

most of the problems that every country faces involve critical thinking, knowledge, and

expertise in a given field. For example, the global COVID-19 pandemic required the

contribution of multiple scientists because they could create the vaccines. In conclusion,

the role of a country in participating in global governance depends on the workforce,

skills, and knowledge of every citizen, which is equivalent to building economic success.
