Mechanics Kinematics Defined

Kinematics is the study of the motion of points,

objects, and groups of objects without considering
the causes (forces/energies) of its motion. Is also
called the “geometry of motion”.

Mechanics
Basic Concepts in Kinematics
There are three basic concepts in kinematics:
displacement, velocity and acceleration.
A. Displacement
Displacement is the change in position of an
object relative to its reference frame.
B. Velocity
Velocity is the rate of change in position with
respect to time.
C. Acceleration
Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity
with respect to time.

Mechanics
Kinematic Equations & Graphs
Kinematic equations (with the aid of graphs) can be used
to calculate various aspects of motion such as
displacement (s), velocity (v), acceleration (a), and time
(t).

Mechanics
Applications

1. A ship slows down its motion from 10 m/s to 6 m/s in 2 sec

under constant acceleration. (a) What is its acceleration?
(b) How far did the car travel during this time interval?

Solution:

DO NOT BE A CABOOSE … BE AN ENGINE! 10

Mechanics
Applications

2. During the compression process in the Diesel cycle the

piston head (from TDC, initially at rest) travels a distance
of 90 cm to the BDC in 2 sec. (a) What was the constant
acceleration of the piston head? (b) With what velocity did
the piston head “touched” the BDC?
Solution:

DO NOT BE A CABOOSE … BE AN ENGINE! 11
