INTRODUCTION

1. General
The Fire Extinguishing System extinguishes the fire by means of
carbon dioxide gas. The system consists essentially of CO2 cylinders,
main isolating valve(s) manifold, CO2 nozzles in compartment protected,
and pipe lines connecting these main parts.

2. CO2 Cylinders
Special cylinders are manifolded together.
The carbon dioxide gas contained therein is a clean, dry, noncorrosive
and non-poisonous substance which will not support combustion.
It is stored under high pressure in the steel cylinders and extinguishes
fire by smothering it. An instruction chart is furnished to indicate
the proper discharge of cylinders for each compartment.
CO2 cylinders are installed in CO2 cylinder room.

3. Pressure/manual operating main isolating valve(s)

Pressure/manual operating main isolating valve(s), normally closed,
are installed in the pipe lines to the compartments and are
connected to the carbon dioxide gas supply pipe.

4. CO2 Nozzles
The carbon dioxide pipe line terminates in Nozzles at the space
protected. In the machinery space, the Nozzles are installed,
through which liquid carbon dioxide is discharged and is
gasified instantly, thereby causing the atmosphere in the space
to become inert and smothering the fire.
Furthermore, there are sirens in the machinery space, which blow
automatically by operating the system and give an alarm to everyone
to escape from the space afire.

CO2 FIRE EXTINGUISHING SYSTEM

CARBON DIOXIDE AS AN EXTINGUISHING AGENT

The Fire Extinguishing System uses carbon dioxide gas as

the extinguishing agent.

For fire extinguishing applications carbon dioxide has a number

of desirable properties. It is noncorrosive, nondamaging and leaves
no residue to clean up after the fire. It provides its own pressure
for discharge through pipes and nozzles.
Since it is a gas, it will penetrate and spread to all parts of
a hazards. It will not conduct electricity and can therefore
be used on live electrical hazards. It can be effectively used on
practically all combustible materials except for a few active metals
and metal hydrides and materials such as cellulose nitrate,
which contain available oxygen.

Under normal conditions carbon dioxide is a colorless, odorless gas

with a density about 50 percent greater than the density of air.
Many insist they can detect an odor of carbon dioxide, but this
may be due to impurities or chemical effects in the nostrils.
Carbon dioxide is easily liquefied by compression and cooling.
By further cooling and expansion it can be converted to the solid
state.

The carbon dioxide is stored in liquid state in steel cylinders

carefully tested for strength under governmental supervision.
The pressure within the cylinder depends on the temperature.
The relationship between the temperature and the pressure is
shown on the curve given in Figure 1.
although the existing of carbon dioxide is never determined by using
a pressure gauge. It may be determained only by the weighing
of the cylinder.

Each cylinder is provided with a safety relief disc which will

release the gas before the pressure exceeds the cylinder test
pressure. Cylinders should be stored in a cool place whenever possible.
The maximum temperature of safe storage for cylinders is 55 Deg. C.
(Refer to CO2 pressure - Temperature curve.)

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

1. Carbon dioxide is not poisonous, but a person cannot breathe

and will suffocate in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide, caution
must be taken when entering any space filled with this gas.

2. Before discharging carbon dioxide into the compartment,

make certain that no one is in the compartment afire.

3. Entering the compartment extinguished, make certain that fire

has been extinguished and the lighting of the Davy Safety lamp
shows that all portions are filled with only fresh air.

4. If it will be necessary for a person to enter a space before

it is throughly ventilated, he may do so by using a fresh air mask
or other type of self-contained breathing apparatus.
DO NOT USE a rebreathing type of mask or a simple gas mask.
No one should enter such a space without help of a person
such as an observer or a standby located outside the space.

5. Provision of adequate aisleways and routes of exit and keeping

them clear at all times, not to disturb person from retreating.

6. Should a person be overcome by carbon dioxide, it is essential that

he should be immediately rescued from the space containing the gas.
To revive a person so overcome, give him plenty of fresh air and
apply artificial respiration (as in the case of drowning) without
the use of carbon dioxide as a stimulant. Call a physician.

7. Do not approach the space where fire has been extinguished with
an open flame or a lighted cigarette as the possible presence of
flammable vapors may cause an explosion.

8. Symptoms of carbon dioxide suffocation are as follows.

A. Increased respiration rate.
B. Increased heart action.
C. Faintness.

OPERATING INSTRUCTION

Fire in Machinery Spaces

It is important that you should carry out the following instructions
as quickly as possible.
The effectiveness of the CO2 is materially increased by catching
the fire in its early stages.

Refer to detailed instructions here after of followings ;

- INSTRUCTION CHART(S)
- INSTRUCTION PLATE(S)
- CAUTION PLATE
- WARNING NOTICE

FOR FIRE IN CARGO HOLD

Confirming the fire in cargo hold proceeds as follows ;

1. BEFORE OPERATING THE SYSTEM

A - Make certain that no one is in the compartment afire.

B - Shut off all mechanical ventilations.
Seal all ventilators, ports, sounding pipes, hatches, etc.,
leading to compartment afire.
Spend a little time thoroughly sealing all openings of
the compartment afire to prevent excessive leakage of
carbon dioxide.

2. GO TO MANUAL OPERATING MAIN ISOLATING VALVE

Compart afire and open the valve in line leading to compartment

afire as fast as possible.

SEAPLUS CO., LTD.

PAGE 6
CO2 FIRE EXTINGUISHING SYSTEM

3. GO TO CO2 EXTINGUISHANT CYLINDERS

A - Pull down the levers or turn the handles manually as fast as

possible. The best guide as to the intervals during discharges
is the condition of the fire.
B - Discharge into the compartment afire the exact number of
cylinders as specified in the table hereafter.
Do not discharge CO2 from starting cylinders until all are used.
If CO2 is discharged from starting cylinders, CO2 of all cylinders
with be discharged simultaneously.
As the supply of carbon dioxide is limited, proper judgement
should be exercised in its use. The distance that the ship is
away from port as well as the possibility of obtaining additional
supply of carbon dioxide at that port, should be taken into
account.

4. DURING THE ABOVE PROCEDURE

During the above procedure and until arrival at port, efforts

should be made to keep all openings closed and made gas tight
by use of wet tarpaulins, caulking with wet rags, wicking,
or similar, means wherever possible.
Any gas seepage from protected compartment should be observed,
seals improved at leakage points, and adjacent areas vacated
if necessary.

5. DO NOT OPEN HATCHES

Do not open the hatches or any other openings or ventilate

the compartment afire until arrival at port, in order to avoid
loss of carbon dioxide.

6. UPON ARRIVAL AT PORT

If possible, arrange at once to have all the carbon dioxide cylinders

recharged and placed in position for future use.

SEAPLUS CO., LTD.

PAGE 7
CO2 FIRE EXTINGUISHING SYSTEM

PROCEDURE FOR UNLOADING CARGO AT PORT

The object of the following procedure is to reach the seat of

the fire as quickly as possible by unloading the cargo,
while an atmosphere of carbon dioxide is maintained in the
cargo hold.

A - As the men work their way deeper into the cargo hold,
check the atmosphere for gas concentration with Davy type
safety lamp to make sure the atmosphere is suitable for
breathing.
If the flame of the safety lamp flickers or is extinguished,
it indicates that there is insufficient oxygen to support life.
It is the safest to check with the safety lamp before any work
is started or before anyone enters the cargo hold.

B - While unloading the cargo, do not allow any more fresh air
to enter the space than required to breath.

C - If smoke or heat increases intensively, making work uncomfortable,

close the hatches, battening them down securely with tarpaulins.
Discharge the number of carbon dioxide cylinders for that space,
as specified in the following table, one at a time, allowing
approximately 2 to 3 minutes to elapse between each cylinder.
In this manner, the necessary concentration of carbon dioxide
will be obtained with the minimum loss of gas.
If at all possible, sample the atmosphere with an orsat,
or other chemical analyzing apparatus, to determine the exact
carbon dioxide content. It is desirable to maintain a 35 to 50
percent carbon dioxide concentration in the space.
After this time has elapsed, no smoke will exist and the hatch
may be opened.
If the atmosphere is suitable for working, as indicated by check
tests with the safety lamp, the unloading operations may be resumed.

SEAPLUS CO., LTD.

PAGE 8
CO2 FIRE EXTINGUISHING SYSTEM

CAUTION - IMPORTANT

Ordinary gas masks of the canister type should never be used in spaces
which contain carbon dioxide.
Under these conditions, there is a lack of oxygen and a person may
literally "drown" in a carbon dioxide atmosphere just as one
may drown in water, simply due to lack of oxygen.

Carbon dioxide is not poisonous and leaves no ill effects.

If a person is overcome by carbon dioxide, give artificial
respiration the same as used in cases of drowning.

Symptoms of carbon dioxide suffocation

1. Increased respiration rate
2. Increased heart action
3. Faintness

Masks fitted with air hoses running to a blower on deck or approved

oxygen breathing apparatus as used in mine rescue work must be used.
As a safety measure, it is essencial to attached lifeline to men
working in hold under these conditions because the men may not be
experienced in this kind of work.
Before the men work too deeply into the wings during the unloading
operations, Particular Care should be taken to check the atmosphere
with the Davy safety lamp.

CAUTION - USAGE OF SAFETY PIN OF CO2 CYLINDER

Please be advised that safety pin should be taken out normally so that CO2 cylinders
should be activated.
After delivery from shipyard, ship's crew have to take out the safety pin.

Caution : While moving of CO2 bottle or any working in CO2 room.

Please put in the safety pin for safety.

PERIODIC INSPECTIONS
The System as installed requires no more than ordinary care to insure
its proper operation at all times. Frequent inspections should be
made, however, as experience has shown that emergency equipment of
this kind is often unintentionally neglected or tampered with.

1. ONCE EVERY MONTH

A. Make general inspection of the entire system to ascertain
that nothing has been placed to interfere with the operation
of the equipment. Inspect all piping and equipment
for mechanical breakage. Replace any damaged equipment
immediately.
B. Inspect piping and hose for mechanical damage. Operate born
valve several times to make certain it does not stick.

2. ONCE EVERY YEAR

It is recommended that the system be inspected by an experienced
Service Engineer of SEAPLUS CO.,LTD. or distributor to authorized.

A. The cylinders should be removed and weighted to determine

the carbon dioxide content. See instructions for removal
included in this book after proceeding. Subtract from total
weight the tare(empty) weight that is stamped on the cylinder
body. If the resulting net weight has decreased from the
proper gas charge by more than 10 percent, the cylinder must
be recharged to its full rated capacity. The proper gas
charge is indicated on the cylinder body.
Record the net weight of gas in each cylinder on record sheets.

B. Remove caps on any safety outlets installed at the ends of any

cylinder manifolds to make certain that the safety discs therein
are intact. If any disc is found to be damaged, it must be replaced.

SEAPLUS CO., LTD.

PAGE 11
CO2 FIRE EXTINGUISHING SYSTEM

3. ONCE EVERY TWO YEARS

A. Blow out all piping with air or carbon dioxide to make certain
that it is not stopped up. Before blowing out system, remove
dirt traps from the ends of the distributing piping.
Before blowing out system, remove all of the starting heads
and following heads from all those of the cylinder valves.

Open any distributing valves and keep open long enough to

insure cleanliness of the pipe.

CAUTION :
DO NOT use water or oxygen for blowing out the pipe lines.
The use of oxygen is especially dangerous as the possible
presence of even a minute quantity of oil may cause an explosion.

B. Restore the system to normal by the said instructions as

outlined under "After Fire Has Been Extinguished."

SEAPLUS CO., LTD.

STARTER
1. Function
By turning the upper handle of CO2 actuating cylinder,
CO2 actuating cylinder valve opens, the discharged CO2 will
open the CO2 extinguishant cylinder valve or P.O.D valve by
means of open the first and second discharge valve via
starting pipe.

2. Restoration
After discharge CO2, turn the handle fully clockwise.
Make sure seal of screw down valve, after installing recharged
starter to the starter box.

3. Recharge and Reinstallation.

Starter that has been discharged or its net weight has decreased
from the proper gas charge, should be recharged in regard to
"instruction of CO2 recharge"

4. Weighing
CO2 cylinder is to be removed from support band and starting
pipe and CO2 cylinder is to be weighed by weighing scale.
If the total weight has decreased from rated weight stamped
on the cylinder by more than 0.2 kg, recharge the cylinder
to its Full rated capacity.

P.O.D VALVE
1. Function
Main isolating valve is a pressure-operated valve system,
which usually closed, and when the starter operates and
CO2 is led to this valve, it will be opened by the pressure
of CO2.

This valve also can be opened by following handling.

SEAPLUS CO., LTD.

PAGE 15
CO2 FIRE EXTINGUISHING SYSTEM

1) The valve under N.B 50 (2").

Remove safety pin, and pull down the lever of valve on the valve
body top counterclockwise, the valve will be opened.
2) The valve above N.B 65 (2-1/2").
Turn the handle of the valve on the valve body top
counterclockwise, the valve will be opened.

2. Restoration
Loosen mounting nut connected at starting pipe and
CO2 escape from there, this valve will be restored automatically.

3. Test procedure
1) Pressure Test
Connect the pressure-source to starting pipe port and
then apply pressure very gradually. If the valve is opened
under about 10kg/cm2 without time delay unit, it is normal.

2) Handling Test
Make sure that this valve can be opened by operating of the
handle during test of CO2 piping.

3) Reset all parts after above test, especially the handle

should be reset perfectly.

SAFETY OUTLET
1. Function
When CO2 leaks from CO2 cylinder and is stored in manifold,
there is a possibility of opening other CO2 cylinders by its
stored pressure. Therefore CO2 can be led to outside safely.
(When manifold pressure increases abnormally, safety disc
will be destroyed, and inner pressure will escape to protect
manifold.)
