Form Three
Field
Athletes have three (3) attempts at Field Events.
Throwing Events:
 Shot Putt
The shot is made up of a cast iron, bronze or brass shell with a lead center. The shot is thrown from a
circle with a diameter of 2.13m and a stop board in front. The 7.26kg shot is used by males and the
4kg shot is used by women. There are two techniques used in shot putt:
o Rotary Technique
o Glide Technique

 Discus
The discus is usually made of wood with a metal rim. It is thrown from a circle with a diameter of
2.5m. The males use a discus with a weight of 2kg and a diameter 219-221mm. The females use a
discus with a weight of 1kg and a diameter of 180-182mm. Techniques used when throwing the
discus are:
o Grip and Windup
o Rotation
o Throw and reverse

 Hammer
The hammer consists of a round weight attached to a triangular handle by a wire. The men’s hammer
weighs 7.27kg and the women 4kg. It is thrown from a circle with a diameter of 2.13m.
 Javelin
The javelin consists of three parts: head, shaft and cord grip. The shaft must be constructed of metal
and have metal head terminating in a sharp point. The cord grip should be about the center of the
javelin. The length of the male javelin is 2.7m and must not weigh more than 800g. The length of the
female javelin is 2.3m with a minimum weight of 600g.
Jumping Events:
 Long Jump
There are two major techniques used by Long Jumpers:
o the Hang technique

o the Hitch Kick technique

Both the hang and hitch-kick require a fast run-up, similar body positions at take-off, and similar
actions for the landing in the sand. Remember that the most important requirements in this event are
speed and spring.
 Triple Jump
Like the long jump the triple jump requires great speed and spring. The triple jump involves three
jumps in sequence (a hop, step and jump), all of which are interdependent.

Hop must take off and land of the same foot.

Step must land on the opposite foot.
Jump must land in the landing area with both feet level in the sand.
 High Jump
High jump techniques have evolved over the years. From Scissors Kick to Eastern cut off to Western
Roll to Straddle. High jumpers today all use the Fosbury Flop technique.

 Pole Vault
In early years, athletes used wooden and aluminum poles and landed on grass, sand or wood chips.
Today’s Pole Vaulter uses fiberglass and graphite poles, high speed runways and immense foam-
rubber bits that cushion landing. There are five stages in pole-vault technique: run-up, the plant, the
take-off, the ride, rock and the bar clearance.
 Combined Events
The two combined event competition in the Modern Olympic Games are the 10-event men’s
decathlon and the 7-event women’s heptathlon. The men’s decathlon has changed dramatically from
its original format, and the women’s heptathlon (a recent addition to the Olympics) has grown out of
the 5-event women’s pentathlon competition.
