Modeling of Universal Protection Scheme Using MATLAB

Objectives:
At the end of this lab session students will be able to
 Understand the working of Differential Relay.
 Model Differential relay in MATLAB Simulink.
Universal Relay:
A universal relay is a type of electrical relay that can be used in a wide range
of applications due to its flexibility and adaptability. This type of relay is
designed to accommodate multiple input and output configurations, making it
a versatile component in various electrical systems.
The universal relay typically consists of a control circuit that manages the
input signals and a switching mechanism that controls the output signals. The
input signals can come from a variety of sources, such as sensors, switches,
or other control devices, while the output signals can drive loads such as
motors, valves, or other electrical equipment.
One of the main advantages of a universal relay is its ability to work with
multiple input and output configurations. This means that it can be used in
different applications without the need for customization or modification.
Additionally, a universal relay can help simplify the design and installation of
complex electrical systems, which can reduce costs and improve reliability.

One of the key advantages of universal relays is their flexibility. They can be
programmed to operate in different ways depending on the needs of the
application. This means that they can be customized to meet specific
requirements and can be easily adapted to changes in the system.
Additionally, because they are a single component that can be used for
multiple applications, they can help reduce the number of components needed
in a system, which can lower costs and simplify maintenance.
Laboratory Task:
Implement a Universal-Relay that protects the Transmission line against all
the faults within the protected zone. In this relay definite time Over current &
voltage scheme is used. Distance & differential relay are primary protecting
devices where over current relay is secondary protecting device and waits for
distance and differential relay to take action first.
Procedure:
Step 1: Draw a power system having a three-phase programmable source,
three phase circuit breaker, three-phase VI measurement unit and three phase
RLC series load. Connect the blocks as shown below. The values of the
Blocks are set according to the values given in the manual.

Step 2: In subsystem “Universal Relay”, connect the blocks as shown in the

diagram and set the parameters of blocks according to the values given in the
manual.

Check the output of universal relay in following fault conditions.

Conclusion:
In conclusion, a universal relay is a highly adaptable and flexible component
in electrical systems. Its ability to accommodate multiple input and output
configurations makes it a valuable tool in a wide range of applications. Its
versatility and ease of use help simplify the design and installation of
complex electrical systems, making it a popular choice among engineers and
technicians in various industries. With the increasing demand for automation
and control systems, the universal relay's importance is expected to continue
growing as a vital component in modern electrical systems.
