BIOLOGY 1 (SB015) ASSIGNMENT 2021/2022 -

BIO WAKELET BLOG: EXPRESSION OF BIOLOGICAL
INFORMATION

Assignment Objectives

Upon completion of the assignment, student should be able to:

a) Describe the concept of Central Dogma.
b) Describe the DNA replication process according to the semi-conservative
model; and list the enzymes and their role in the DNA replication process.
c) Explain the transcription and translation processes; and differentiate the
location, stages, enzymes involved and product of both processes.
d) Briefly explain the synthesis of viral proteins in infected cells; and suggest a
possible way to prevent translation of the viral mRNA.
e) Illustrate the mechanism of lac operon in the presence and absence of
lactose.

General Instructions

1. Student must work on this assignment individually.

2. This assignment must be prepared in English and computer-generated.
3. Create a blog using the Wakelet platform concerning the expression of
biological information.
4. The blog must include the following:
i. Front page with title and student’s details
ii. Concept of Central Dogma
iii. DNA replication process according to the semi-conservative model;
and list of enzymes and their role in the DNA replication process
iv. Transcription and translation processes; and differences concerning
the location, stages, enzymes involved and product of both processes
v. Synthesis of viral proteins in infected cells; and suggestion of a
possible way to prevent translation of the viral mRNA
vi. Mechanism of lac operon in the presence and absence of lactose
vii. Reference
5. The assignment (pdf version AND link of the Bio Wakelet Blog) must be
submitted online in the Google Classroom latest by 15th October 2021.
*Drafts can be submitted starting from 20th September 2021.

Detailed Instructions

Part A: Front page of blog

1. Include title with suitable cover image.
2. Include student’s details (student’s full name, matric number, practicum,
profile picture).

Part B: Concept of Central Dogma

1. Briefly describe the concept of Central Dogma based on a suitable diagram.

Part C: DNA replication

1. Describe the DNA replication process according to the semi-conservative
model based on a suitable diagram.
2. Tabulate list of six enzymes involved in DNA replication and state their roles
in the DNA replication process.

Part D: Protein synthesis - transcription and translation

1. Explain the transcription process based on a suitable diagram.
2. Explain the translation process based on a suitable diagram.
3. Tabulate the differences concerning the location, stages, enzymes involved
and product of both transcription and translation processes.
2
Part E: Synthesis of viral proteins
1. Find information and briefly explain the synthesis of viral proteins in
infected cells.
2. Suggest a possible way to prevent translation of the viral mRNA.

Part F: Mechanism of lac operon

1. Choose a suitable animation or video to illustrate the regulation of lac
operon in the presence and absence of lactose.
2. Briefly explain the mechanism of lac operon.

Part G: References
1. Refer to at least 1 book and 2 website sources.
2. Arrange all references according to alphabetical order.
