The RF gain through the system may be set to be proportional to the delay
amount, or may be set in an optical AGC mode where the system RF output is at
a constant RF power level.

All RF over Fiber, Optical Switch, Power Supply, and JS14 Management & Control
modules are pluggable and field replaceable. The system may operate from AC
or -48 VDC power sources. The standard RF interface is 50 Ohm SMA, however
specialized RF connectors may be required for the higher RF frequencies.

RF status and optical switching may be monitored and controlled via SSH
command line interface, HTTP Web user interface, Optical Zonu J-Control
graphical user interface, and/or SNMP v2 and v3 (see JS14 Managed Switch
datasheet).

Switching Time
The switching time of the J-OPS switching module is typically 8 msec. This is the approximate time for the optical switch to
respond to the manual toggle switch. This does not include the variable time required to command the J-OPS remotely via
SNMP or other means over a network.

RF Characteristics
RF characteristics are dependent on the RF frequency band and the amount of optical (RF) delay. Contact Optical Zonu for
specific details.

Switch Topology
Each individual switch (up to 4) within the J-OPS plug-in module acts as a 2-state, 2:2 crossover switching element. The
module may also be commanded to implement a simple ON/OFF single pole single throw (SPST) switch. Contact Optical
Zonu for details.

The high reliability internal switching elements within the J-OPS plug-in are designed for a lifetime of one million switches.

J-OPS Module Block Diagram and Delay Switching Topology

The J-OPS optical switching module block diagram is shown in the figure below. The J-OPS module provides from 1 to 4 of
the optical 2:2 crossover switches in series. When used to implement a variable switched optical delay line, each 2:2 optical
switch is connected to a discrete delay element (fiber spool) within the fiber spool chassis. In this way, any combination of
delay elements may be combined in series to result in the temporal RF delay required. In the figure below, just one delay
element is shown.

Control of J-OPS Optical Switches

As noted previously, individual 2:2 switches (up to 4) within the J-OPS switching plug-in module may be switched between
the two valid states (spool included / spool bypassed) by pressing the physical toggle switches on the front of the module.

Switch states may also be set and changed remotely over a network via the Optical Zonu J-Control graphical user interface
(GUI). The GUI agent resides within the JS14 managed switch. Only a standard browser is needed to access remotely. The GUI
J-Chassis is shown below.

Clicking on the J-OPS plug-in icon in the chassis pops out the J-OPS module slot window (bottom left). Clicking on any of
the other module icons within the chassis pops out context relevant slots windows as well. An individual 2:2 switch within the
J-OPS module may be toggled between its two valid states by clicking on the appropriate toggle button within the chassis
or within the J-OPS slot window. Referring to the figure below, clicking on the second 2:2 switch element within the J-OPS
module changes its state from include spool (left) to bypass spool (right).

Switch states may also be toggled via SNMP v2 and v3. Contact Optical Zonu for details

Optical AGC
The optical AGC function (optional) is implemented by an Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA) that follows the delay spools
and precedes the fiber optic receiver. The EDFA is operated in the constant saturated output power mode. Regardless of
the amount of fiber signal attenuation caused by the switching of delays, the optical power input to the fiber optic receiver
remains constant. In this way, the end-to- end RF gain of the delay line system remains constant.

RF Frequency Range
RF frequencies from VHF up to 60 GHz may be used with the delay line system. Systems must be carefully designed such
that the dynamic range of the RF signal is minimally impacted by the delay system. The system must be designed such that
RF signals are not compressed. Contact Optical Zonu for assistance.

Bidirectional Operation
The delay line system is agnostic to signal direction. Instead if using a fiber optic transmitter at the delay "input" and a fiber
optic receiver at the delay "output", a pair of fiber optic transceivers may be used. Transceivers would include an integrated
WDM such that RF signals could pass in each direction through the delay system. Multiple RF signals could be passed through
the system in either direction by multiplexing multiple CWDM wavelengths onto a single fiber.

Switched Delay Quantization

In multi-delay switched systems, the values of the discrete delays may be chosen to implement a certain maximum delay,
a certain range of delays, and the quantization between delay values. In the example shown in the table below, two J-OPS
plug-in optical switch modules (4 x 2:2 each) are used to select any combination of 8 discrete elements (28 = 256 total delays).
Contact Optical Zonu to define specific delay configurations.
