SPEECH PATTERNS FOR AN ON-the-spot-speech

PREP: Position – Reason – Example – Position
● Used when you are given a situation or quote
Example:
Topic: Social Media Is Not Social At All.

Social media may serve its purpose in connecting people around the world. However,
POSITION I believe social media is not making us social; in fact, it makes us asocial.

To be social means being able to socialize and mingle with other people through small talks
and such. What happens is that in large gatherings, instead of striking a conversation with
the people around us, we tend to look down on our phones and browse social media sites. What
REASON is that called? Being asocial. Because (of) social media, (it) makes us poor communicators of
meaning. We have sacrificed conversation for connection. We spend more time socializing
online than face-to-face.

1 2 3 4 5 6
module 7

For example, instead of meeting new friends personally,

some would rather make friends online. Perhaps it’s
because we forgot the basics of making friends. After all,
we spent too much time using social media. Sometimes, we
EXAMPLE
tend to be “talkative” and “outgoing” in social media, but
in real life, we are quiet and find it hard to talk with
people. We can’t even make a physical conversation
running because of social media.

Again, social media may serve its purpose in

POSITION connecting people but it fails to make us
social.

SPEECH PATTERNS FOR AN ON-the-spot-speech

PPF: Past – Present – Future
● Used when comparing events or situations within a timeline
Example:
Topic: The world is a smaller place these days

In the past, communication, especially long distance

communication, wasn’t an easy feat for all the citizens
of the world. But necessity indeed is the mother of all
PAST inventions. Our forms of communication evolved from
that of sketches on the caves, smoke signals, pigeons,
messengers, telegram, and the telephone.

1 2 3 4 5 6
module 7

Today, perhaps the biggest innovation in communication

that made the world a smaller place for all of us is
the internet. Everything form of communication is
PRESENT
virtually made possible by the internet. Wherever you
are in the world, you can easily access the net and
communicate with anyone you wish.

So what can we expect from all of this moving

forward? Such innovations (will) in this era of
FUTURE communication will only bring about even more
convenient and sophisticated technology that will
surely bring greater advantage for all of us.

module 7

SPEECH PATTERNS FOR AN ON-the-spot-speech

SMC: Story – Message – Call to action
● Used to relate a topic to one’s own or other’s experience
Example:
Topic: The Pandemic

Our world is undeniably affected by COVID-

19, especially the aspects of health and
STORY economy of many countries in general. We,
humans, being the cause of the virus’
surfacing, are and can be its end.

1 2 3 4 5 6
module 7

With this, the Local and National Government have been

repetitive on the Safety and Health Protocols so that
MESSAGE we can avoid any further casualties, and all of us are
called for to be responsible citizens not only for
ourselves and our families but for the nation itself.

However many chances and material things we

CALL might lose in these trying times, we have to
TO abide by the rules of our Health experts and
ACTION the government so that we will not lose what
money can never afford- life.
