IV. WRITING YOUR SPEECH

ENGLISH CLASS

Teacher: Bobby, join these two sentences

together. I was cycling to school. I saw a dead
body.

Bobby: (thinking for a while) I saw a dead body

cycling to school.
IV. WRITING YOUR SPEECH
A. The process of outlining a speech is broken down
into 4 essential steps

1. Preparation
 WHAT
 decide on your topic; know your purpose
 the main points ranked in order of importance with
supporting research
 WHO
 consider the audience and refine your topic to suit
them
 HOW
 long it needs to be (eg. 3 minutes, 5 minutes...)
HOW TO WRITE THE SPEECH INTRODUCTION

Tonight, I am graduation, I invitation you

all to eat our house because I know
someday I will eat your house too. I will die
five chickens, three girls and two boys to
eat you all and I will ask my father to cook
my mother…. Thank you
2. Introduction
 What makes a great opening?
 opening greeting and specific hook (attention getter)

Question
e.g. “How many people here have a hard time
balancing work, family and personal time?”

Startling/Surprising Statement or fact

e.g. - “ One out of ten people we meet everyday
have no heads.”
- Children do not trust us anymore.
Statistics
 Based on the report made by the National Safety
Council, there are about 1,600,000 accidents per
year caused by texting while driving. Texting
while driving is about six times more likely to
cause an accident than driving intoxicated.

 A recent study states that your genes get either

get healthy or unhealthy, depending on what
triggers you to enjoy pleasure. Such a study has
never been conducted before and people are
surprised to see the results.

Current Event
 “You might have heard the news about the
military take over that happened in Turkey a
few days ago…”

Your Own Story

 “Two weeks ago, I was going to my office
when I met two strange men…”
Humorous one-liner
 The problem with trouble shooting is that
trouble shoots back.
 Talk is cheap. Until you hire a lawyer.
 I’ll try not to talk too long. They say it’s best
to leave your audience before your audience
leaves you.
 I hope you will enjoy my speech and if you do
not, I hope you will have a good nap.
 Each of us here has a job to do. My job is to
talk and yours is to listen. The challenge is
for me to finish my job before you have
finished yours.

 I won’t speak for long on account of my

throat. (clears throat) At my last engagement
I talked too long, and someone threatened to
cut it.
 Defining your thesis statement
 one-sentence statement that tells your audience what
the entire speech is about

 For many of you here, time management can

be a major struggle, but it doesn’t have to
be.”
3. Body
 Use transition or link between introduction and body
 Support main ideas with examples and details (research
findings, story, current events, facts etc.)
 Tie your points with transitions (first, second or finally)
 Include Visual Aid
 Object, flip chart, a power point presentation, overhead
projector, slides or any dry erase board.
 Whatever visual you are using, make sure everyone
can see it.
 Don’t allow the visual to become a silent
demonstration. Keep talking as you show the visual
 Maintain Eye contact
 Look at the audience as you speak.
 Small audience - look at each person in a short period
of time.
 Large audience - look at your audience in small
“clumps” and move from one “clump” to another.

One way to insure good eye contact is to look at your audience

before you start to speak. Go to the lectern and pause, smile,
look at the audience and speak.
4. Conclusion
 summarize your main points (quotation, question, forceful
and emphatic statement, call to action)

Rehearsing your speech

Don't be tempted to skip this step.
The "not-so-secret" secret of successful speeches
combines good writing with practice, practice and then
practicing some more.
QUOTES
1. “A good speech should be like a woman's
skirt; long enough to cover the subject and
short enough to create interest.”
― Winston S. Churchill -

2. “Knowledge speaks, but wisdom listens.”

Jimi Hendrix
3. “To speak and to speak well are two things. A
fool may talk, but a wise man speaks.”
– Ben Jonson
4. “My job is to talk; your job is to listen. If you
finish first, please let me know.”
– Harry Herschfield –

5. “Speech is a mirror of the soul. As a man

speaks, so is he.” – Publilius Syrus-
