ABSTRACT

This study aimed to explore and describe the experiences by the Grade

11 students of Castor Z. Concepcion Memorial National High School on their

combating recovery journey in depression and anxiety. In data collection,

qualitative approach particularly the case study was used to investigate the

question, which was used in the interviews with Grade 11 students. There are

five(5) participants involved in the study have been chosen through purposive

sampling in which they have highly meet the criteria established by the

researchers. The procedures in conducting the study include various

combinations of tools and literally sources such as photo documentation and

voice records during the face-to-face interview wherein semi-structured

interview guide questions were utilized. It was conducted at Castor Z.

Concepcion Memorial National High School during the 2nd semester of the

School Year 2022-22023. The findings revealed that many of the students have

learned new things and improve themselves upon the journey but have also

encountered some problems. However, they were still able to resolve those

problems and finish the recovery successfully. Therefore, support networks are

an effective strategy for every student to communicate and help others in the

future. Thus, it is strongly recommended that the school administration

present programs that will help the students learn more about depression and

anxiety because it is very mysterious yet the majority of the people especially in

school lacks knowledge about this topic.

Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study

Depression is a major cause of disease burden and disability, with

adolescents being particularly vulnerable. Prevalence rates in childhood are low

with no gender differences, but increase significantly in adolescence, with

gender differences emerging. This suggests that adolescents are particularly

vulnerable to depressive disorders.Depression is a common and serious

medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how

you act. Fortunately, it is also treatable.Depression causes feelings of sadness

and/or a loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed. It can lead to a variety of

emotional and physical problems and can decrease your ability to function at

work and at home. This study about depression is quite strange topic because it

is very mysterious yet the majority of the people especially in school lacks

knowledge about this topic.

The World Health Organization reported a rise in the burden of depression

globally and a World Health Assembly resolution in May 2012 called for a

coordinated response to mental disorders at country level. In Greece, there has

been limited research on the epidemiology of depressive disorders in

adolescence. A recent study reported a prevalence rate of 26.2 % in Greek

CASTOR Z. CONCEPCION MEMORIAL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
“A Happy School Sustaining Excellence”
Antonino, Balaoan, La Union

adolescents attending senior high schools, and an earlier study showed high

prevalence of depressive symptoms in adolescents aged 12-17 years old. A

recent study in Greek adults reported that one month prevalence rate of major

depression in the subgroup of youth under 24 years old increased considerably

between the years 2008 and 2011. Younger age was identified as a risk factor

for major depression in the Greek population. However, a different sampling

procedure and a fully structured psychiatric interview reported a lower

prevalence rate of depression, which increased with age.

Depression is a common illness worldwide, with an estimated 3.8 % of the

population affected, including 5.0 %among adults and 5.7 % among adults

older than 60 years.Approximately 280 million people in the world have

depression.Depression is different from usual mood fluctuations and short-

lived emotional responses to challenges in everyday life.Especially when

recurrent and with moderate or severe intensity, depression may become

serious health condition. It can cause the affected person to suffer greatly and

function poorly at work, at school and in the family. At its worst, depression

can lead to suicide.Over 700 000 people die due to suicide every year.Suicide is

the fourth leading cause of death in 15-29 years old.

Beside the burden a depression has on the individual, it has also some for

the community. When leaving depression untreated, people run risk to become

socially isolated and even destroy relationship and the social

environment(Lepine & Briley,42011; WHO, 2017)

CASTOR Z. CONCEPCION MEMORIAL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
“A Happy School Sustaining Excellence”
Antonino, Balaoan, La Union

To date global research on depression has used assessment tools based

on research and clinical experience drawn from Western populations (i.e., in

North American, European and Australian). There may be features of

depression in non-Western populations which are not captured in current

diagnostic criteria or measurement tools, as well as criteria for depression that

are not relevant in other regions.

The most important details are that depression is the most common

mental health condition in the Philippines, with 3.3% of the population living

with it and the suicide mortality rate being higher due to economic and social

barriers. This is due to the fact that many Filipinos don't seek help due to

economic and social barriers.

Furthermore depression causes consequences for mental healthcare and

economics. People who suffer from depression are unable to function well in

society, which pertains in their private lives as well as at work. In many cases

they have to stop working in order to recover from the depression and cannot

use their whole potential or are missing on workdays regularly (Lepine &

Briley, 2011; Chipman, 2014; WHO 2017).

In the Philippines, 3.3 % of the population or 3,398,652 Filipinos live with

depression.Suicide Mortality Rate is 3.2 (per 100, 000 population) were likely to

be higher since many Filipinos don’t seek help because of economic and social

barriers.Unfortunately, the opposite is also true for those who lack social

connectedness.More than 7 % of adults are diagnosed with depression, but

CASTOR Z. CONCEPCION MEMORIAL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
“A Happy School Sustaining Excellence”
Antonino, Balaoan, La Union

people aged 12-15 have the highest rates of depression.Low levels of social

connection are associated with declines in physical and psychological health as

well as a higher likelihood for antisocial behavior that leads to further isolation.

The University Students Depression Inventory was used to determine the

social and demographic factors associated with higher levels of depressive

symptoms among 2,436 Filipino university students. Six of the 11 factors

analyzed were found to be statistically significantly associated with more

intense levels of depressive symptoms. These factors included frequency of

smoking, frequency of drinking, not living with biological parents,

dissatisfaction with one’s financial condition, level of closeness with parents,

and level of closeness with peers. Sex, age category, course category, year level,

and religion were not significantly related. In identifying students with greater

risk for depression, characteristics related to lifestyle, financial condition,

parents and peers are crucial. There is a need to carry out more surveys to

develop the pool of local knowledge on student depression.

The researcher decided to conduct this study for younger students to have

a hope, empowerment, and autonomy are the main objectives of the individual

journey that is recovery. Yet healing is frequently achievable for many people

who are struggling with mental health issues.According to research, having a

social support network can improve your general mental health, particularly

for women, older people, patients, workers, and students.

B. Statement of the Problem

This study aims to explore how social support effects on one's health and well

being in overcoming depression. The purpose of this study is to ascertain how

depression affects people's lives.

The study was specifically designed to address the following questions:

1. What are the life struggles in combating anxiety and depression?

2.How did the students overcome anxiety and depression?

3. What lessons have they learned during the start in combating anxiety and

depression

4. What are the motivations to continue living despite the anxiety and

depression?

C. Significance of the Study

The result of the study will benefit the following:

Students: This study will be helpful to school programs that help young people

become more resilient to traumatic life events and seek help early.

Individuals suffering from depression: The study may show that networks

can help individuals overcome depression.

Mental health professionals: The study’s findings can help mental health

professionals design effective treatment strategies and understand the

importance of support networks.

Friends and family of those suffering from depression: Providing

appropriate support can lead to better results for those suffering from

depression.

Community: Support networks can help individuals with depression recover

and thrive by promoting social connectedness and supportive relationships.

Researcher: Finding a quick cognitive intervention model that works and can

be improved by using pertinent or contextual social support resources for

assisting adolescent students with mild to moderate depression

For future researchers: Researchers that intend to conduct the above-

mentioned study in the future will utilize the findings of this investigation as a

guide.

D. Scope and Delimitation

This study focuses on the Navigating depression with the power of support

networks of Senior High School in Castor Z. Concepcion Memorial National

High School.

The data collection will be conducted to 10 randomly of the total population in

Senior High School of Castor Z. Concepcion Memorial National High school,

school year 2022-2023 who will represent the population. This study will not

cover other problems that are not consider as one of the navigating depression.

The other students which do not fall as part of Senior High School students are

not within the scope of this research. The study would be done through the

utilization of questionnaire to the students as a survey and reference. By their

METHODOLOGY

This chapter contains a full overview of the research approach that will be

used in the study. The chapter has been arranged into many sections that

provide a framework within which to outline the research techniques. This

chapter contains a full overview of the research approach that will be used in

the study. The chapter has been arranged into many sections that provide a

framework within which to outline the research techniques. This chapter

discusses research design, population, locale of the study, data gathering

procedure, data gathering tool, data analysis, and ethical considerations.

A. Research Design

The researchers make use of case study research design which is

appropriate to provide clarity, and validity. According to Cherry (2022) A case

study is an in-depth study of one person, group, or event. In a case study,

nearly every aspect of the subject's life and history is analyzed to seek patterns

and causes of behavior. Case studies can be used in various fields, including

psychology, medicine, education, anthropology, political science, and social

work.

The purpose of a case study is to learn as much as possible about an

individual or group so that the information can be generalized to many others.

Unfortunately, case studies tend to be highly subjective, and it is sometimes

difficult to generalize results to a larger population. While case studies focus on

a single individual or group, they follow a format similar to other types of

CASTOR Z. CONCEPCION MEMORIAL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
“A Happy School Sustaining Excellence”
Antonino, Balaoan, La Union

psychology writing. A case study is a detailed study of a specific subject, such

as a person, group, place, event, organization, or phenomenon. Case studies

are commonly used in social, educational, clinical, and business research.

The qualitative research utilized an interpretative case study.Case studies

are good for describing, comparing, evaluating and understanding different

aspects of a research problem. A case study is an appropriate research design

when you want to gain concrete, contextual, in-depth knowledge about a

specific real-world subject. It allows you to explore the key characteristics,

meanings, and implications of the case.

Case studies are often a good choice in a thesis or dissertation. They keep

your project focused and manageable when you don’t have the time or

resources to do large-scale research. You might use just one complex case

study where you explore a single subject in depth, or conduct multiple case

studies to compare and illuminate different aspects of your research problem.

(McCombes, 2019)

B. Locale and Population of the study

The study was conducted in Brgy. Antonino, Balaoan, La Union

particularly at Castor Z. Concepcion Memorial National High School. The

sample of the study includes the participants who suit to the given

qualification set for the study. The qualification set is as follows:(1) the

participants should be Senior High School students (2) from Castor Z.

Concepcion Memorial National High School, and (3) they should have

“A Happy School Sustaining Excellence”
Antonino, Balaoan, La Union

experience in anxiety and depression. The number of participants who will be

participating in the study will depend on the answers of the participants until

it satisfies its saturation. In selecting the participants, the researchers chose (5)

five students in Gas Strand who experience in navigating with depression. This

study is based on purposive sampling.

C. Data Gathering Procedure

The data gathering instruments that we used were to gather the Senior

High School students profile. The names and strands were to be listed with

their corresponding section. On the presentation to the participants, some basic

and essential information about the study, as well as the reintroduction, was

well presented as was the research, which has proven to be much more

effective than the type of research that we are doing. The researcher also used

this method of data gathering because it is known to have less bias and is the

least expensive way of collecting data. The participants were given the

opportunity to ask questions and get clarifications.

And it is also promotes open-minded options that were provided to

accommodate open-minded options related to our study and to also avoid any

kind of bias in the method of collecting this data.It also encourages the

respondents to be more cooperative due to the fact that it is much more

comfortable to respond and much more open to options, but still related and

specific to the type of research that the researcher is conducting. To prevent

excessive disruption.
CASTOR Z. CONCEPCION MEMORIAL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
“A Happy School Sustaining Excellence”
Antonino, Balaoan, La Union

D. Data Gathering Tool

For the documentation and data collection for this project, a number of

techniques were used, including interview guide questions, pen and paper,

cameras, voice recorders, and other equipment. The guide questions were

tailored to the participants' level of knowledge so they would be simple to grasp

and comfortable to respond to. During the interview, certain prepared

questions and their associated follow-up inquiries were made and put to the

participants.

In order to acquire data without bias, cameras were used for

documentation and evidence gathering. Voice recorders were utilized to record

all data and information in addition to taking notes on the responses provided

by the participants. These recordings served as a reference for participant

quotes.

E. Ethical Consideration

Researchers were opted to further provide truthful information and

guaranteed that the information they were contributed were remained

confidential and private as well as the participants’ identity. The names of the

participants are optional, and they shall not be obliged to answer any

questions which have been written. In addition, in view of the fact that all data

are factual and reliable, credibility was also taken into account. The

researchers chose to conduct an interview where the participants felt

comfortable and were able to answer questions easily. As a tool to gather data
CASTOR Z. CONCEPCION MEMORIAL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
“A Happy School Sustaining Excellence”
Antonino, Balaoan, La Union

and serve as proof, certain technical instruments have been used; however

they were not used for disgracing one's decency.

F. Data Analysis

In data analysis, processes involved were the reaffirmation, evaluation

and interpretation of the experiences encountered by the Senior High School

students on their recovery journey basing on the data that were gathered.

Furthermore the quality and utility of the study depend on the

researchers ability to collect and analyze the data.(1) The data that were

gathered and recorded during the interview were transcribed into written words

by the researchers, (2) written information were read several times, (3) the

researcher requires to reflect before and during the research process to provide

context and understand for the reader, (4) it’s objective extraction of content

from texts to identify themes and make thematic analysis about the data

collected.

Results and Discussion

CASTOR Z. CONCEPCION MEMORIAL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
“A Happy School Sustaining Excellence”
Antonino, Balaoan, La Union

This chapter presented the analysis and interpretation of the topic Beyond The

Blues: Combating Anxiety and Depression with the Power of Support Networks

with the grade 11 students of CZCMNHS.

Themes of the topic Beyond The Blues: Combating Anxiety and Depression

with the Power of Support Networks.

Themes:

1. Emotional Numbness

1.2 Existensial Despair

2. Inspirational Outcomes

2.1 Support Networks

2.2 Rebuilding Life

3. Conversation Orientation

3.1 Moral Lesson

4. Upward Spiral

4.1 Interpersonal Dynamics

Theme 1: Emotional Numbness

A person frequently contemplates life and dwells on situations that cause a

significant sense of hopelessness or unhappiness. They feel inadequate and

also consider killing themselves.Emotional numbness may cause you to feel

hollow, dead, shut down, or with an empty sense of not having any feelings

(Litz & Gray, 2002).

CASTOR Z. CONCEPCION MEMORIAL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
“A Happy School Sustaining Excellence”
Antonino, Balaoan, La Union

Mahogany expressed that,

As I experience anxiety and depression I feel really terrible with myself.I

can’t think right, my heart feels so empty.

Narra stated that,

Depression and anxiety can lead to persistent feelings of sadness,

hopelessness, guilt irritability and worthlessness. These emotions can make it

challenging to engage in daily activities, enjoy hobbies, or maintain a positive

outlook on life.

Acacia expressed that,

Your like a cracked plate or maybe a wilted vegetable without a life the

feeling that everything is pointless ,worthless, its feels like you always wanted

to die.

Based on their answers, the participants shared their experiences of feeling

numbness about depression and anxiety during their recovery journey. The

participants stated that having a depression and anxiety will destroy you and

give you more challenges in combating them.

Emotional numbness may resolve relatively quickly. The support of a

mental health professional may help you overcome feelings of emotional

numbness in as little as five weeks (Sloan et al., 2018). In the absence of

treatment and support, emotional numbness may last for years or even a

lifetime (Ruscio et al., 2002).

Sub Theme: Existensial Despair

CASTOR Z. CONCEPCION MEMORIAL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
“A Happy School Sustaining Excellence”
Antonino, Balaoan, La Union

It states how it describe as feeling emptiness or feeling unfocused. This will

be done by relating existential changes to possibly disruptive experiences of

loss in wider experience. With the help of several perspectives on dealing with

loss it will be argued this can be integrated in processes of recovery.

Mahogany stated that,

Depression affects every feeling you are in especially your mood, the way

you eat, and the way you talk to other people.

Acacia stated that,

Its affects me mentally and emotionally ,you cannot even move properly its

always feels like anything has nothing to heal on your situation.

Balete stated that,

The loss of appetite for everything and self-floating.

Gmelina stated that,

There are days it affects my studies, my daily life and also ruin everything.

The participants answered the same challenges that the participants

experienced during combating the depression and anxiety. The challenges that

have been stated by the participants include the following: the feeling

emptiness, their struggle everyday, the loss of everything and even also the

lack of motivation.

Existential concerns such as thoughts about life, who we are, and what

we wish to be are all part of human life. Existential concerns can be triggered,

for example, when a person becomes ill or is confronted with death or another
CASTOR Z. CONCEPCION MEMORIAL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
“A Happy School Sustaining Excellence”
Antonino, Balaoan, La Union

person’s illness. These concerns can also develop during the transition from

childhood to young adulthood as well as throughout other life phases. When

everyday life is challenged, thus we begin to think about our existence and

what it means to be a human being (Yalom, 1980), causing us to reflect on the

meaning of life on a deeper level and have doubts about our existence. In terms

of young adults, these existential concerns can grow unmanageable and

disrupt their daily lives, manifesting as anxiety, stress, and depression

(Besharat et al., 2020; Moore & Goldner-Vukov, 2009).

Theme: Inspirational Outcomes

Longstanding evidence supports that motivation is an important predictor of

mental health (Deci and Ryan, 2000).

Mahogany stated that,

My best friend encourage me to stand up and she’s the one who say I

can do everything without hesitations.

Narra stated that,

Three of the more common methods used in depression treatment

behavioral therapy, and psycho-dynamic therapy.

Acacia stated that,

By trusting and believing my self that I can overcome those situation on

my life and socializing to those people who truly cares to me.

Balete stated that,

Going to church and praying where all the problems are said and God is the
CASTOR Z. CONCEPCION MEMORIAL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
“A Happy School Sustaining Excellence”
Antonino, Balaoan, La Union

one who will give me medicine for my challenges in life.

The participants use different strategies in recovery journey which had a

big impact in their process. Based on the findings, the strategies that they use

is socializing one by one and trusting yourself.

For example, identified motivation is evident when a patient recognizes and

accepts that process is useful for achieving personally relevant goals (Ryan &

Deci, 2008), which is more internalized than interjected motivation, which is

evident when a individual is driven by feelings of guilt, shame or anxiety,

depression and might feel ashamed or disappointed if he did not remain in

process.

Sub Theme: Support Groups

Building and maintaining a strong support system of people who can provide

encouragement, help you to keep moving and involved in meaningful activity, and

help you challenge your negative thinking is a critical part of a self-care plan.

Mahogany stated that,

Yes my family my friends who is at my back to help me fight against

those situation.

Balete stated that,

My family and my friends who always support me in everything and guide

me.

Gmelina stated that,

CASTOR Z. CONCEPCION MEMORIAL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
“A Happy School Sustaining Excellence”
Antonino, Balaoan, La Union

In my own way and with my own help, there are also times when I talk to

my family or people I can trust and there I tell my problems and ask for advice.

The strategies of participants help them to achieve a particular goal or

objectives. Support Networks assists in believing in the result of the recovery

journey. It states how an individuals should manage to achieve a desired goal,

which is to recover immediately from depression and anxiety and be a lesson to

his/her self and others.

Social networks protect individuals from mental health conditions of

depression and anxiety.Close ties with family, neighbors, and community had

significantly lower odds of anxiety and depression than private restricted

networks. The clustering of people to each social network type and its

associated mental health conditions can inform social network-based public

health interventions to optimize positive health outcomes in the community

cohort. Devassy, S. M., Scaria, L., Cheguvera, N., & Thampi, K. (2021)

Sub Theme: Rebuilding Life

CASTOR Z. CONCEPCION MEMORIAL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
“A Happy School Sustaining Excellence”
Antonino, Balaoan, La Union

Individuals with depression and anxiety and their relatives increasingly

expect improvement not only in their symptoms but beyond that in their

functioning and quality of life.

Mahogany stated that,

It takes time to recover from overcoming depression. But when my heart

become light and my mind starts to think normally. When I feel those feelings I

think I am on the right path on recovering from anxiety and depression.

Narra stated that,

Its important to be patient, be kind to myself, and continue to seek

professional help when needed.

Acacia stated that,

I don’t know how to describe the process of my recovery but one thing I know

was when its feel like the surroundings are no longer heavy on our feelings

there you go the path to recovery and overcoming of those situation are

coming.

Gmelina stated that

With the help of my family and friends they help me by giving me advice

that I am not alone.

The participants have answered the same support strategies from their

families, which had a big impact on combating depression and anxiety.

Meaning in life reflects the feeling that one's existence has significance,

purpose, and coherence (see Heintzelman and King, 2014).Individuals who

CASTOR Z. CONCEPCION MEMORIAL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
“A Happy School Sustaining Excellence”
Antonino, Balaoan, La Union

perceive their lives as full of meaning live longer, healthier, and happier lives

than those less inclined to view their lives as meaningful.

Theme: Conversation Orientation

Conversation orientation refers to the extent to which family members utilize

open and honest communication (Koerner & Fitzpatrick, 2006). Families with

high conversation orientation share their personal feelings and thoughts and

are characterized by high levels of interaction.

Mahogany stated that,

I keep motivated by the words of God, the verses from the bible, and the

support I get from my friends especially my family.

Acacia stated that,

My family, wants help me to be motivated to live my dreams inspired me to

continue living despite to those challenges.

Balete stated that,

My family because no matter what challenges come my way, they are the

reason why I fight.

Gmelina stated that,

My family is my motivation to continue my life.

All of the participants have answered the same strategy on how their

family help them in combating depression and anxiety's. The participants

expressed that they have computed first all their expenses on the ingredients
CASTOR Z. CONCEPCION MEMORIAL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
“A Happy School Sustaining Excellence”
Antonino, Balaoan, La Union

needed then dividing it from the number of products that have been made and

simply adding some amount.

The family is the most stable social institution of mankind and has a

special role in people’s lives (Clark, 2015; Koerner & Schrodt, 2014). The family

has many functions, including these functions can be referred to the family

communication patterns. Family communication patterns affect the child’s

behavior and personality (Rusta, Esfandyari Bayat, & Ayzinia, 2014).

Family communication patterns contains two dimensions of conversation

orientation and conformity orientation (Koerner & Fitzpatrick, 2002a).

Conversation orientation provides a comfort zone for family members, and

helps them to participate in various activities. Warm and friendly relations,

freedom to express feelings and consult with others are among the features of

families with conversation orientation. They tend to value their close

relationships, speak to their family members on their private issues, and

prevent conflict. They are skillful at maintaining the relationships, and

Personal strength, determination, and self-sufficiency were also regarded as

important. It meant people were able to make use of available resources and

develop self-help and personal coping strategies which in turn promoted

independence and a sense of control.

Mahogany stated that,

Personal values and beliefs helps a lot to cope with the challenges of

anxiety and depression. For instance, it makes me realize that life is amazing to

live on.That’s why I keep going.

Narra stated that,

Lets recognize ourselves as facing challenges and setbacks, and its okay to

imperfect.By embracing self-compassion, we can gain resilience and a healthier

perspective when dealing with anxiety and depression.

Acacia stated that,

I do learn how to fight with my own battles even it is hard, my mental health

proved me that even you are physical strong mental health will always help you

on those situation when it comes to those challenges.

Gmelina stated that,

It will help my personal belief that I can overcome these challenges

because it is the reason why I continue in my life.

Based on the results, participants said that they have learned something

in line with combating anxiety and depression; in addition, some also stated

that the said journey was hard and challenging. The participants have learned

the following: fight their own battles, self-compassion to improve and keep

going.

People reflected on the ways in which treatment choices influenced their

quality of life, specifically moving them from a place of coping, to a position

where they could enjoy and appreciate their lives.

We have all had difficult times and challenges in our lives, and most of

us feel that we learned something from those experiences. At the same time,

few people actually become wise in the course of their lives – while most of us

become (or remain) well-adapted and happy, generally satisfied, or even bitter

or depressed. Why is it that some people, but not others, grow wise over time

by learning from life’s challenges (Linley & Joseph, 2004)

Theme: Upward Spiral

Realizing and learning through experience is one of the most fundamental and

natural means of learning available to everyone. You will conquer those

challenges, better yourself and achieve success in recovery as a result of your

life experiences, whether is good or bad.

Mahogany stated that

I learned to myself that I need to keep going in order for me to overcome

those challenges. And I also learned that realizations and trusting myself was

the greatest improvement I can have to overcome anxiety and depression I can

face.

Narra stated that,

It can take time, patience, and a combination of strategies to find the right

strategies that work best for us.

Acacia stated that,

I do learn to fight with my own battles even it is hard my mental health

proved me that even you are physical strong mental health will always helps

you on those situation when it comes to those challenges.

Balete stated that,

I learned to fight even through it was very difficult. I learned to rise above

everything for my family and myself.

Gmelina stated that,

I learned that it’s not easy to go through this problem and that’s when you

think that you need your families because they are the only ones who can help

you.

Based from the findings, most of the participants answered the same on

how the participants cope up with their conflicts or challenges that they faced

in combating depression and anxiety, hopelessness, time and improvement on

their recovery journey. Some of the solutions that were stated by the

participants are to just go with the flow and use a combination of strategies to

find the right treatment that works best for us.

Depression can feel like a downward spiral, pulling you into a vortex of

sadness, fatigue, and apathy. The truth is that there isn't one big solution to

depression, but there are numerous simple steps you can take to alter brain

activity and chemistry. Some are as easy as relaxing certain muscles to reduce

anxiety, or getting more sunlight to improve your mood. Small steps in the

right direction can have profound effects—giving you the power to become your

best self as you literally reshape your brain, one small change at a time.

Mahogany stated that,

I want to say to everyone who’s having anxiety and depression that no

matter what happens never give just fight also to trust the process. You are not

alone.

Acacia stated that,

Always fight for your self against those situation and when you encounter

those challenges don’t let them beat you.

Balete stated that,

What I can advise everyone who is experiencing depression and anxiety is

that they should not beat themselves up too much because that is not a good

enough way to overcome that you should get up and fight and pray together.

B. Conclusions

Based on the findings, the following conclusions are formulated:

1. Support groups are very important in combating of depression and

anxiety on any recovery journey, whether mild or severe. Every member

of the family, friends and even peers must be given a chance or an

opportunity to advice. The idea and cooperation of every member of the

family could contribute a lot in the success of the recovery.

2. An patient should think enough for different treatment in order to

combating his/her depression and anxiety a strategies especially that in

mental health issues there are lot of challenges. These strategies have a

large impact on the recovery journey.

3. Learning from mistakes is an important aspects of personal growth and

can be particularly relevant when combating with depression and

anxiety. It also serves as training for them to improve and increase their

knowledge in line with the recovery journey process in which they have

learned more about it.

4. In every mental health issue, mild or severe, the presence of conflicts is

natural and can’t be avoided, but they can be resolved in support

groups. A patient may experience common conflicts such as

hopelessness, suicidal idealization and even mood swings but a patient

must bravely face the challenge and always find ways to resolve it for a

better and more successful recovery.

5. Depression and anxiety are common mental health condition that affect

millions of people worldwide. An individual or patients must strength

and fight against with those challenges to maintain formal and informal

community education efforts or surroundings mental health handled by

good support network to establish a awareness and successful recovery

without suffering a bigger problem in the process.

recommendations:

1. Surround yourself with supportive and understanding individuals, such

as friends, family, or support groups. Share your experiences, feelings,

and challenges with them. Having a strong support network can provide

emotional support, encouragement, and practical assistance when

needed.

2. Individuals must participate in activities that bring them joy, purpose,

and a sense of accomplishment. This may include hobbies, creative

outlets, volunteering, or engaging in activities that align with your values

and interests.

3. Healthy communication between peers or friends and the individual is

important to their journey and also to the members of their family to

avoid harming themselves. Mental health professionals should develop

an individualized treatment plan and offer guidance throughout the

recovery process.

4. The researchers strongly recommended that the school administration

present programs that will help the students learn more about

depression and anxiety because it is very mysterious yet the majority of

the people especially in school lacks knowledge about this topic.
