The 2004 edition of AS 4685.1 is amended as follows; the amendment(s) should be inserted in the appropriate
place(s).

2006 For the equipment in supervised early childhood settings, all access ramps, stairways, step
and bridges shall be provided with a continuous handrail on each side. For equipment in all
other settings, two handrails shall be provided on each side to cater for the use of all age
groups (see Figure 8). This requirement is a minimum and does not preclude the use of
barriers. This requirement does not apply to rung ladders and/or stiles used as handgrips,
and step ladders where a single handrail of a height suitable for supervised early childhood
equipment will suffice. For rigid bridges over 1.5 m height see Clause 2.2.4.3.1.
