Purposive Communication

Arceo, Allona A. BA - 102

Learning about the different levels of communication helped me gain a deeper

understanding of others and how to avoid miscommunication. As humans, we are
susceptible to miscommunication, whether through gestures or words, so I avoid them
by sitting with my thoughts first, assessing the situation, and then initiating a
conversation when we're both clear-headed. Hence, the transactional model is the most
relevant since it states that both parties can be the receiver or sender. That's how
effective communication works, by having all parties switch roles, like from listener to
speaker and vice versa, though it's difficult nowadays because social media limits
communication as much as it makes it more accessible. A great example of a real-life
situation that uses Grice's conversational maxims is when a user online asks what really
happened during Martial Law. You answer with what you know and base it on evidence.
Don't be a know-it-all. Be truthful.
