History of Assam District:

1. After Independence - 13 Districts.


2. In November 1951 NC HILLe & United Mikie Districts were carved out of Golaghat , Nagaon ,
Cachar , Jaintia &Naga Hills Districts.
3. In 1983, Sonitpur District was carved out of Kamrup,Jorhat District was carved out of
Sibsagar,Karimganj District was carved out of Cachar and Dhubri District and Kokrajhar
District was carved out of Goalpara.
4. In February 2003, Kamrup Metropolitan District was carved out of Kamrup.
5. In 2015,Then CM Tarun gogai announced establishment of 5 new districts in Assam which
increased total number of districts from 27 to 32.
6. Two more districts were announced on 26th January 2016 but it’s status was withdrawn.
7. By August 2020, total number of district was 24 but in December 2022 few district were
merged into few other districts now total number of districts in the state is 3.
