B. Read the following statements. Write Yes if the statement describes

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque, Jr. during his virtual press
briefings and write No if it does not describe him.
YES NO Statements
1. He is stretching his head in different directions.
2. He is not looking directly at the camera and most of the time
his eyes are wandering.
3. He speaks with a loud and clear voice.
4. He speaks too fast or stumbles over one’s words.
5. He speaks in a high-pitch voice.
6. He speaks in a low and soft tone.
C. EVALUATING SPOKEN TEXT
Spoken text include interviews, dialogues, monologues, discussions,
phone conversation, presentation to the class, role plays, welcome to
country speech and etc. The interaction of people when they speak to each
other is made up of series of utterances, such as comments, questions,
replies, requests, responses, and suggestions. In news reports n televisions,
you may observe that both the newscaster (interviewer) and the source of
information (interviewee) produce spoken text. When they produce spoken
text, they communicate their messages. Communication can be understood
by considering two aspects, such as verbal and the nonverbal aspects. The
verbal is the aspect that makes use of words, may be oral or written. While
the nonverbal is the aspect does not make use of words.
Study the table below that shows the differences between verbal and
nonverbal.
Aspects Traits of the speaker
Maintains good eye contact and posture
Nonverbal Uses body motions and gestures effectively
Communication Comfortable and confident
Shows engaging and inviting presence
Voice is clear, confident, steady, and strong
Verbal Uses inflections to create interest or to emphasize
Communication key points
Talking pace is consistently appropriate

As evaluating spoken task or text requires careful analysis, aside from

understanding the concepts portrayed in spoken text, other criteria may be
used in evaluating spoken text. These include the following:

Fluency- refers to one’s ability to clearly pronounce words with appropriate

speed, accuracy and expression.
Example: How comfortable the speaker is when he/she speaks?
How easily do the words come out?
Tone- refers to the feelings or emotions the speaker portrays in a listening
text or material.
Volume- deals with the loudness or softness or speaker’s voice indicating
emphasis on important points or concepts.
Pitch- refers to highness or lowness of the speaker’s voice. This involves the
concept of intonation.
Speed- refers to how slow or fast the speaker is in speech or delivery.
Word choice- is very essential as it indicates attitude or certainty. Aside
from volume, word choice also indicates emphasis on important concepts.
Cohesion- refers to the organization of words, phrases and concepts
presented in a listening text.
Correctness- refers to the rightness or precision not only in grammar, but
more importantly, the accuracy in concept.

D. Building your perspective in life may help you to live more fully.
Benjamin Foley in his article “Four Proven Strategies That Will Transform
Your Perspective and Life” wrote that the power of mindfulness is to
skillfully think by viewing crises and threats as challenges that lead to
personal growth. You may agree that living in the time of COVID-19
pandemic is a challenge. But by being optimistic, people can view a bad
event like this as a momentary occurrence that will be resolved sometime
in the future as Foley pointed in his article. He wrote that instead of
contemplating the worst case scenario, an optimist can bring awareness to
the situation and realize the temporary nature of the thing. An optimistic
person feels they can overcome a difficult.
Directions: Read the question below. Write your answer on a separate sheet
of paper. Request one of your family members who can assist you to watch
and listen to you as you share your thoughts about the question. Tell your
family member to evaluate you using the criteria of a spoken text. After the
evaluation, ask your family member to explain his or her score in each
criterion.
