Course Information
 Course number: NURS 299
 Course title: Nutrition and Development Across the Lifespan
 Semester & year: Fall 2023

 Pre-requisites: Admission to Nursing Program
 Co-requisites: NURS 314, NURS 310 or Cultural Diversity

Course Description
Focus on application of growth and development principles and the
science of nutrition in health and illness across the lifespan,
emphasizing social, ethnic, religious, cultural, environmental, and
economic factors within the United States

Class Schedule

Course Assignments/Assessments:

Exams
We will have five proctored exams in the course, including one for
each section of the course. Each exam is worth 14% of the course
grade. Exams are individual, closed book, closed notes, with remote
proctoring. A student who cheats on an exam will receive a “0” grade
for the exam and may suffer other penalties for academic dishonesty.
Penalties may include dismissal from the nursing program. See Exam
Policy later in this syllabus.

Section Major Assignments


 Section 2: Individual Nutrition and Exercise Plan (5%)
o Type of Project: Individual Nutrition and Exercise Plan Table
o Purpose: (1) To assess your nutritional intake and physical activity by
documenting diet and physical activity and comparing results with recommended
intake/physical activity guidelines. (2) Identify two critical nutritional needs that
are not being met and any physical activity needs that can be improved and
develop a plan to correct the deficiencies. The plan should include fluid intake

and physical activity participation. (3) Consider culture as it relates to dietary


preferences and availability.
 Section 3: Review of Journal Article on Cultural Perspectives (6%)
o Type of Project: Individual APA paper
o Purpose: (1) To appreciate different cultural perspectives about developmental
issues, (2) to analyze how cultural differences influence Healthy People 2030
goals, (3) to gain experience with peer review, and (4) to reflect on your learning
process.
 Section 4: Healthy Schools Certificate (2%)
o Type of Project: Group project and written assignment
o Purpose: (1) Identify health promotion opportunities in the school environment.
(2) Describe the nine school health guidelines to promote healthy eating and
physical activity. (3) Identify strategies to create opportunities for students to
participate in more physical activity and improve healthy eating in the school
setting.
o ATI Skills Modules 3.0 Nutrition Activities (2%)
 Purpose: Read ATI nutrition-related content to prepare for the nutrition
ATI assessment. Complete Practice Challenges 1-3 to prepare for the
nutrition ATI assessment.
 Section 5: Health Promotion & Nutrition Group Project (7%)
o Type of Project: Group presentation and teaching handout
o Purpose: (1) To analyze a client’s history and nutrition data and provide health
promotion and nutrition interventions/resources, and (2) teach developmentally
appropriate health-promoting strategies based on Healthy People 2030 objectives

Late Assignments
Late assignments are accepted at the instructor’s discretion. If the assignment is accepted late, a
reduction in points will be incurred at the instructor’s discretion. Assignments will not be
accepted after two days late. Students will receive a grade of “0” for any assignment that is over
two days late.

Class Activities
Please watch the lectures BEFORE class. Be prepared to participate in
class activities, including discussions, peer review, group work, exam
reviews, case studies, etc.
