Welcome to the Animation 12 Self-Learning Module on History of Animation!


This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and
reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

LESSON
Early Ways of Showing Motion seen as early as 30,000 B.C. – 1500 A.D. There
have been attempt to depict things in motion which can be proven by
archeological artifacts. The following are some notable examples from ancient
times, as well as an example from the European Renaissance:

SHAHR-E SUKHTEH VITRUVIAN MAN
A bronze-age pottery bowl Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man
depicts goats leaping multiple angles implying movement
(Shahr-e Sukhteh, Iran)

1600-1877 Animation Before Film. Experimentation with machines that would


make images appear to move came with the spread of the Industrial Revolution
in Europe and North America in the 18th and 19th centuries.

MAGIC LANTERN
Using pictures on sheets of glass, this magic lantern has the ability to project
images. This was considered as the first example of projected animation since
some sheets contain moving parts,

1900-1930 The Silent Era. Theatrical showings of cartoons started in the early
20th century marks, especially in the United States and France. Several
professional animators, with New York-based Bray Studios being the most
opular of this period. Bray helped launch the cartoonists careers making
Mighty Mouse, Betty Boop, and Woody Woodpecker.

HUMOROUS PHASES OF FUNNY FACES
Using stop-motion photography to create
action this marks the first entirely animated
film.

1908
FANSTASMAGORIE
Considered by film historians to be the first animated cartoon for the reason
that it is the first animated film using hand-drawn animation.

1914
GERTIE THE DINOSAUR
Considered the first cartoon to feature an
appealing character.

1919
FELIX THE CAT
Felix the Cat-often considered the first
animated movie star, was introduced by
Musical Mews and Feline Follies.

1928
STEAMBOAT WILLIE
Considered as the first notable
success for Walt Disney Studios,
founded in Los Angeles in 1923. This
features Mickey Mouse—becomes the
first cartoon with the sound printed
on the film.
1930-1950s The Golden Age of American Animation. Theatrical cartoons
became an integral part of popular culture during what many consider to be
the “Golden Age” of animation,. These years are defined by the rise of Walt
Disney (Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Silly Symphonies), Warner
Brothers, MGM, and Fleischer (Betty Boop, Popeye).

1960-1980s The American Television Era. The animation industry started to


adapt to the fact that television as the entertainment medium of choice for
American families continued its growth. Studios produced many TV cartoons,
using a style of "tiny animation." In the mid-eighties, cartoons became popular
on TV with support from cable networks like The Disney Channel and
Nickelodeon.

television Hanna-Barbera released
“The Flintstones”.

YOGI BEAR
Another Hanna-Barbera production, The
Yogi Bear Show, a spin-off of Huckleberry
Hound, debuted on national TV.

1964
THE PINK PHINK
The Academy Award for Best Short Film was won by
DePatie-Freleng Enterprises for The PinkPhink (of
the Pink Panther series) and continued to create
shorts for theatrical release.

1980 – 2014. Modern America Era. The CGI (Computer Generated Imagery)
revolutionized animation. A principal distinction between CGI animation and
traditional animation is that drawing is replaced by 3D modeling, much like a
virtual stop-motion version. A type of animation combining the two and using
2D computer drawing can be regarded as computer-aided animation.

THE SIMPSONS
The Simpsons is an American adult, animated sitcom

Groening. It is America's longest running comedy,
America's longest running animated show and in 2009
it surpassed Gunsmoke as America's longest running
scripted primetime TV series.
