Scavenger Hunt Resource: Matching Terms with Definitions
Instructions: Match the following terms with their corresponding definitions. Search
around your environment or use educational resources to find the answers. Have fun
exploring the world of ecology and ecosystems!
Terms:
1. Producers Organisms that obtain their energy by
consuming other organisms. They include
herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores.
2. Consumers An animal that hunts, catches, and eats
other animals (prey) for sustenance.
3. Decomposers The natural environment or home of an
organism, providing everything it needs to
survive, including food, water, shelter,
and suitable living conditions.
4. Predator Animals that are hunted and eaten by
other animals (predators) as a source of
food.
5. Prey These are organisms, usually plants, that
produce their own food through
photosynthesis, using sunlight, water, and
carbon dioxide.
6. Habitat These organisms break down dead plants
and animals into simpler substances.
They play a crucial role in recycling
nutrients in ecosystems.

Task:
Look around your school or home environment to find an example of a producer. What
characteristics indicate that it is a producer?
Ans:Mango trees are producers on the grounds of my school and because they produce
a fruit which is mango that is why it is a producer.
Identify at least two examples of consumers in your surroundings. Are they herbivores,
carnivores, or omnivores? How can you tell?
In my surrounding consumers are humans and cats. Humans are omnivores because
they eat both meat and also plants like chicken and mint leaves. And cats eat meat so
they are carnivores.

Search for evidence of decomposers. Where might you find them, and what role do they
play in the ecosystem?
Decomposers can be found in forests such are fungus. Fungus decomposes dead
roots, leaves, flowers, fruits, seeds, branches and much more in the forest. So fungus
play’s this role to decompose different matter in the forest.

Imagine you are observing a predator-prey interaction. What are the characteristics of
the predator, and how does it capture its prey?
For example if i imagine that cat eats rabbit so in this situation cat will be predator
because it’s hunting the rabbit to eat it and rabbit is the one which is being hunted.

Identify a specific habitat in your local area. What features make it suitable for the
organisms that live there?
Garden is a habitat outside my home for insects. Insects in my garden then eat the fruits
or food from trees and few insects also eat leaves. So because they have food in the
garden to eat it makes it suitable for insects to live there.
