Comprehensive Guide to Cell Theory

The cell theory laid the foundation for modern biology and our understanding of life. Some key impacts and relevance include: - It established that all living things are made of one or more cells, shifting biology from more descriptive natural history to understanding life at the microscopic level. - It helped explain reproduction and inheritance by introducing the idea that cells come from pre-existing cells through division. This led to discoveries in cell division and genetics. - It showed that basic cellular processes like metabolism and energy flow occur within cells, not just organisms, helping explain life at its most fundamental level. - Even with subsequent refinements, it remains the central unifying concept in biology by demonstrating that all organisms share similar cellular organization and biochemistry.

CELL THEORY
The cell is the basic unit of life.
All living things are made of cells.
Cells come from pre-existing cells.

MODERN CELL
THEORY
▪ All organisms are made of one or more cells.
▪ The energy flow occurs within cells.
▪ The cellular constituents are similar amongst the
various individuals of similar species.
▪ The DNA molecules hold the genetic information and
chromosomes.
LIMITATIONS OF THE CELL THEORY
Schleiden and Schwann did not know the mechanism of cells.

Viruses are considered as acellular entities with no cell machinery.

RBCs and sieve tubes function without a nucleus to live.

In a few organisms, the structure of the body is not differentiated.

Cell theory is not true in the case of prokaryotes.

Case Study:
A 34-year-old former high school track star who is now a recreational runner, her tiredness
was going far beyond what she thought should be normal for someone in generally good
physical shape.

Jasmin was feeling a level of fatigue that was far beyond normal tiredness.
She was experiencing extreme fatigue after her runs, as well as muscle cramping, spasms,
and an unusual sense of heaviness in her legs. At first, she just chalked it up to getting older,
but her exhaustion and pain worsened to the point where the former athlete could no longer
run for more than a few minutes at a time. She began to experience other unusual
symptoms, such as blurry vision and vomiting for no apparent reason.

Concerned, Jasmin went to her doctor, who ran many tests and consulted with several
specialists. After several months, she was finally diagnosed with a mitochondrial disease.
Jasmin is surprised. She has an 8-year-old niece with a mitochondrial disease, but her
niece’s symptoms started when she was very young, and they included seizures and
learning disabilities. How can Jasmin have the same disease, but different symptoms? Why
didn’t she have problems until adulthood, while her niece experienced symptoms at an early
age? And what are mitochondria, anyway?
