Science Activity Sheet No. 1 Parts of the Microscope and their Functions

I. Learning Competency with Code

Identify parts of the microscope and their functions. (S7LT-IIa-1)

II. Background Information for Learners

Microscopy is the technical field of study which uses microscopes to view samples and objects that cannot be seen with the
unaided eye (objects that are not within the resolution range of the normal eye).

A microscope is an instrument used to view objects that cannot be seen by the naked eye. It produces enlarged images of
small objects. It has three major parts, namely: mechanical, magnifying and illuminating. The mechanical parts of the microscope
include the base, arm, stage clips, body tube, stage, adjustment knobs, revolving nosepiece, diaphragm and inclination joint. The
magnifying parts include the objective lenses and eyepiece or ocular. The illuminating parts include the mirror and condensing
lens.

The microscope has become an important investigative instrument in studying objects and samples of organisms around
you. Knowing its parts as well as its proper manipulation and care will make your study of science effective, interesting and more
meaningful.

__________________ 1. It is where viewer looks through to see the specimen. It usually contains certain markings such as 5X,
10X, and 15X which indicates the magnification power.
__________________ 2. It connects the eyepiece to the objective lenses.
__________________ 3. This part connects the body tube and the base of the microscope.
__________________ 4. It gives fine tunes to the focus and increases the detail of the specimen.
__________________ 5. A rotating turret that houses the objective lenses. The viewer turns it to select different objective lenses.
__________________ 6. It gathers light from the specimen, magnifies the image of the specimen, and projects the magnified
image into the body tube.
__________________ 7. The flat platform where the slide is placed.
__________________ 8. It reflects light up to the diaphragm, the object to be observed and the lenses.
__________________ 9. It adjusts the amount of light that reaches the specimen.
__________________ 10. It connects the arm and the base of the microscope. It also allows one to tilt the microscope so viewing
is possible while seated.
Activity 2

Teacher Gwin conducted a group activity for her students. Their task was to view the onion cell under a microscope. Before
her students performed the activity, Teacher Gwin first gave them reminders on the basic microscope techniques and rules to
follow when using the microscope.

Direction: To fully understand the basic microscope techniques and rules, read pages 97-98 of Science 7 Learner’s Material, and
complete the statements below by filling in the blanks with the correct terms. You can choose your answer from among the boxes.

3. In mounting a specimen, always begin with the (6) ____________.
4. Always watch from the (7) ____________ of the microscope when you use the (8) ____________ to avoid running the
objective lens into the slide.
5. Always return the microscope lens to the (9) ____________ when you’re done.
6. Always use (10) ____________ to clean the microscope lenses.
7. Never use the (11) ____________ with (12) ____________.
8. Focus on the (13) ___________ first and then rotate the higher power objective into place.
