kilometers. The major islands of the Philippines are Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The Philippines has
no land boundaries. The estimated total length of the coastline range from 17, 500 km to 36, 289 km. The
Philippines claims a territorial sea of up to 100 nautical miles from the nearest coastline, an area that
includes the entire Sulu Sea and the Northern part of the Celebes Sea. It also consists of volcanic islands,
including active volcanoes. The longest river in the Philippines is the Cagayan (Rio Grande de Cagayan)
on Luzon, about 650 km in length.
2. Identify the Philippine Disasters. (10 points)

o Earthquakes, volcanoes, storms, tropical cyclones, typhoon, and floods are the Philippine Disasters.

3. Explain Philippine Disaster Reduction and Management Act (RA 10121). (20 points)

o The Philippine Disaster Reduction and Management Act of 2010 (RA 10121), is a comprehensive
legislation designed to strengthen the country’s disaster risk reduction and management capabilities. This
law provides a framework for proactive and coordinated approach to disaster prevention, mitigation,
preparedness, response, and recovery. It establishes the National Disaster Risk Reduction and
Management Council (NDRRMC) as the central coordinating body responsible for formulating policies,
plans, and programs for disaster management. RA 10121 emphasizes a community-based and

II. Essay

1. Explain the two categories of disaster and differentiate each.

o Natural disasters refer to events triggered by natural phenomena such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and
hurricanes. Despite being labeled as "natural," humans are major contributing factors in creating
disasters. Their predictability is limited, and response efforts aim to mitigate immediate impacts and
provide aid. In contrast, man-made disasters result from human-induced hazards and can be categorized
into Armed Conflict and Civil Strife, Technological Disasters, and Disasters in Human Settlements. They
are often more predictable due to identifiable human causes, and responses focus on emergency services,
containment, and addressing root causes.
2. How can you actively participate in enhancing community preparedness during disasters and calamities.

o I can actively participate in enhancing community preparedness during disasters and calamities by
attending seminars and drills to gain knowledge on how to prevent and mitigate the impact of disasters.
Through acquiring this knowledge, I can share it with everyone, utilizing the media to disseminate what I
learned in those seminars and drills. This way, I can help others learn about preparedness during
calamities.
