STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY

PROBLEM SET NO. 2

TEST I. Identify the following. Write your answer on the space provided. Strictly no erasure.
_______________ 1. It is a specific numerical value of a population parameter.
contain the true parameter values.
_______________ 2. it is another term for Interval Estimate.
_______________ 3. It is the best point estimate of the population mean.
_______________ 4. It is a range of values that is used to estimate a parameter. This estimate may or may not
_______________ 5. It is a value or a range of values that approximate a parameter. It is based on a sample
statistics computed from sample data.

TEST II. Find the margin of error and the confidence intervals for the population mean from the given information:
1. X = 5.8, n = 36, σ = 1.2, 95% confidence level
2. X = 108, n = 50, σ = 26, 99% confidence level
3. X = 10.2, n = 45, σ = 0.25, 90% confidence level
4. X = 300, n = 64, σ = 15, 95% confidence level
5. X = 15,000, n = 50, σ = 84.56, 99% confidence level

TEST III. Solve the following problems:

A. The mathematics department of a certain university is conducting a study to determine how long it takes its
graduates to find a job. A sample of 31 graduates was surveyed and it was found that the average time it took a
graduate to find a new job was 3.5 months with a standard deviation of 1.5 months.
1. What is the best point estimate for the true average time it took the graduates of this department to
find a job?
2. With 99% confidence, compute for the margin of error and construct a confidence interval for the true
mean time for the graduates of this department to find a job.
3. If the population standard deviation is 1.2 months, construct a 95% confidence interval for the true
mean time for the graduates of this department to find a job.

B. The reaction of certain air pollutants with rain water causes acid rain that corrodes exposed metals. Supposed
that the water samples from 5 instances of rainfall are collected and analysed for acidity (pH level) yielding the
following pH levels:, 4.9, 5.0, 4.4, 5.2, 5.5,
1. Find the point estimate of the true pH level in rainfall.
2. Find the standard error of the sample.
3. With 99% confidence, find the margin of error of this estimate as well as the confidence interval for the
true mean pH in rainfall.
