Region III
I. Introduction
In the First Quarter, you learned that there are different materials in the environment. For this lesson,
you will be introduced to the diverse kinds of living things and the processes and interactions they go
through. This lesson deals with different kinds of living things and what they are made up of.
In the lower grades, you have learned that the human body is made up of organ systems that work
together. In turn, these organ systems are made up of organs whose functions are related with each
other. For example, the heart and the blood vessels are organs that facilitate the circulation of blood
and nutrients to the different parts of the body; similarly, the esophagus, stomach, and intestines work
together to carry out digestion of food. The organs are made up of even smaller structures: the tissues
and cells.
III. Objectives
After going through this Learning Activity Sheets, you are expected to:
IV. Discussion
The Levels of Organization are structures in nature, usually defined by partwhole relationships, with
things at higher levels being composed of things at the next lower level. Typical levels of organization
that one finds in this lesson include the atomic, molecular, cellular, tissue, organ, organ system,
organism, population, community, ecosystem, biomes, and biosphere levels.

Organ - Group of tissues joined as a unit to perform a function. Examples - Heart, brain, liver,
skin, kidney.
Organ System - Group of organs joined as a unit to perform a function. Examples - Nervous
system, circulatory system.

Population - A group of organisms of the same species that interbreed and live in the same
area. Examples - Coyotes in Yosemite Nat. Park, deer in Sam Houston Jones State Park.
V. Activities

Part III. Fill in the blanks for the level of organization being represented in each description
below.
1. A body part usually composed of several tissues grouped together to a structural and
functional unit? ________________________
1. A chemical sub-unit consisting of two or more atoms joined together by chemical bonds?
______________
1. A very large organic molecule (polymer) consisting of many repeating smaller organic
molecules (monomers)? ________________________
1. Organisms living with other organisms, plus their physical surroundings? ________________
1. A well-defined part of a cell, often bounded by a membrane, and having a specific function?
________________________
1. An individual living entity which carries out all life functions? ________________________
1. A group of organs whose separate functions are integrated to perform a specific task?

VI. Assessment
Multiple Choice. Read the following statements. Choose the letter of the correct answer.
ATOM C. MOLECULE
ORGANELLES D. CELL

A. POPULATION C. COMMUNITY
B. ECOSYSTEM D. BIOSPHERE
VII. Reflection
Fill in the circles with the scientific attitudes you possess. Your answer may Levels of
organization are (1) __________________, usually defined by be an attitude not included in today’s
lesson but is based on your readings.
Share a situation in which you exhibited such an part-whole relationships, with things at (2)
