LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

Science 7 (Q2 – Wk3)
Levels of Biological Organization

I. Introduction
In the First Quarter, you learned that there are different materials in the environment. For this lesson,
you will be introduced to the diverse kinds of living things and the processes and interactions they go
through. This lesson deals with different kinds of living things and what they are made up of.

In the lower grades, you have learned that the human body is made up of organ systems that work
together. In turn, these organ systems are made up of organs whose functions are related with each
other. For example, the heart and the blood vessels are organs that facilitate the circulation of blood
and nutrients to the different parts of the body; similarly, the esophagus, stomach, and intestines work
together to carry out digestion of food. The organs are made up of even smaller structures: the tissues
and cells.

II. Learning Competency

Different levels of biological organization from cell to biosphere. (S7LT-IIc-3)

III. Objectives
After going through this Learning Activity Sheets, you are expected to:

1. Identify the various levels of biological organization;

2. Give your understanding on the word ‘hierarchy’, as in politics; and 3. Sequence the hierarchical
levels of biological organization.

IV. Discussion

Levels of Biological Organization

The Levels of Organization are structures in nature, usually defined by partwhole relationships, with
things at higher levels being composed of things at the next lower level. Typical levels of organization
that one finds in this lesson include the atomic, molecular, cellular, tissue, organ, organ system,
organism, population, community, ecosystem, biomes, and biosphere levels.

Atom - The smallest unit of matter.

Examples - Oxygen (O), Helium (He)

Tissue - Group of specialized cells that perform a specific function.

Examples - Muscle tissue, skin tissue.

Organ - Group of tissues joined as a unit to perform a function. Examples - Heart, brain, liver,
skin, kidney.

Organ System - Group of organs joined as a unit to perform a function. Examples - Nervous
system, circulatory system.

Organism - A distinct living thing; classified into unicellular or multicellular. Examples -

Human, snake, mushroom, bacteria.

Population - A group of organisms of the same species that interbreed and live in the same
area. Examples - Coyotes in Yosemite Nat. Park, deer in Sam Houston Jones State Park.
