Lesson 3: CELL TYPES

Name: ___________________________________________________ Date: _________________________

Grade and Section: ______________________________________ Rating: ________________________

In this lesson, you will learn how different cell types in your body keep you alive and how it differs
in terms of structures and functions. The value of OBEDIENCE will be integrated in this lesson,
as you respect, realize one’s uniqueness and appreciate the importance of each person.

I. LEARNING TARGETS:
At the end of this lesson, you can classify different cell types (of plant/animal tissues)
and specify the function(s) of each (STEM_BIO11/12-Ia-c-4) by:
1. Identifying the different cell types and;
2. Differentiating animal/plant tissues based on their structures and functions.

II. LEARNING EXPERIENCES:

A. Focusing Activities
a. Priming Activity
Title of the Activity: “Inhale, Exhale”
Instructions:
1. I want you to focus your attention on the paper bag. I will count for 1, 2 and 3.
2. After the 3 counts, INHALE 1, 2, 3 EXHALE.
3. Let’s do this for three times.

b. Activation of Prior Knowledge

Title of the Activity: How amazing!

c. Guided Questions:
1. What are your observations on the pictures?
2. Are the structure and functions of the components that make up an organism’s body related
to each other?
d. Linking Statement:
Amazing! The picture shows the shape of an airplane is similar to the general form of a
bird. The shape of a boat resembles that of a fish. This shows that structures present in living
organisms are usually used as a basis for designing objects. The structure is always related to
its function. You will learn more as we discuss Cell types. Hence, you will be working in dyad.
Also, you are expected to classify different cell types (of plant/animal tissues) and specify
the function(s) of each.
III. GUIDED INSTRUCTION
a. Concept Notes:
There are different levels of biological organization and these include the following
(lowest to highest): Chemical (atom, molecules), organelle, cell, tissue, organ, organ
system, organism, population, community, ecosystem, and biosphere.
Animals have four (4) types of tissue:
 Epithelial tissue, connective tissue, muscle tissue, and nervous tissue. They all differ
significantly in structures and functions.

1. Epithelial tissue is composed of tightly packed cells that cover, line, and protect the body
part. It can be classified based on cell arrangement (simple, stratified, pseudostratified) and
cell shape (squamous, cuboidal, and columnar).

2. Connective tissue is made up of cells and an extracellular matrix that connects, protects, and
supports body parts. Bone, cartilage, dense connective tissue, loose connective tissue, and
blood are the types of connective tissue.

3. Muscular tissue is composed of highly specialized muscle cells that contract to produce
movement. It has three types: skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscles.
4. Nervous tissue is made up of neurons that receive and conduct electrochemical signals and
supporting cells (glial cells) that support, protect, and insulate neurons.
2 types of Nervous tissue
1. Neurons- nerve cells that conduct electrical signals.
2. Neuroglia- connective tissue that supports neuron. (Types of Neuroglia: CNS and PNS)

Plant tissues
Plants have two major tissues: namely Meristematic and Permanent tissues.

1. Permanent tissues are generally responsible for photosynthesis, support, and transport of
water and nutrients.
2. Meristematic tissues give rise to permanent tissues which will differentiate into specialized
cells with certain functions.

Apical and lateral meristems are responsible for primary and secondary growth, respectively.
- Primary growth is an increase in plant’s height.
- Secondary growth is an increase in plant’s diameter and girth.
Ground tissues are also called as fundamental tissues because their functions are essential
for the growth and development of plants.
- Parenchyma is responsible for storage and photosynthesis.
- Collenchyma and sclerenchyma provide support to the plant’s body.

Checking for Understanding:

Title of Activity: Can you explain?
Instructions:
1. You will answer the following questions in not more than 3 sentences.
2. Each questions worth 5 points.

Questions:
1. How will you describe the hierarchy of the biological organization?

2. What are the different cell types and how they differ to each other in terms of functions?

3. How will you classify the different cell types of (plant/animal) tissues and its functions?

4. Using the venn diagram, compare and contrast plant and animal tissues.

Your answer will be graded using this rubric:

to the Question effectively to all aspects of the questions.

Understanding understanding of the importance of studying about
cell.
