Levels of Biological Organization
Republic Act 8293, section 176 states that: No copyright shall subsist in any
work of the Government of the Philippines. However, prior approval of the government
agency or office wherein the work is created shall be necessary for exploitation of such
work for profit. Such agency or office may, among other things, impose as a condition

I Need to Know
This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you
describe the different levels of biological organization from cell to biosphere
(S7LT-IIc-3). The scope of this module allows you to use it in many different learning
situations. The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students.
The lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. But the
order in which you read them can be changed to correspond with the textbook you
are now using.
Lesson Overview

Figure 1. Levels of Biological Organization
The cell is the basic unit of life. There are two kinds of cells: plant cells, which have
a rigid cell wall made of cellulose molecules, and animal cells, which have flexible
cell membranes.
A Tissue is made of cells that work together to perform a certain task. Muscle
tissue, connective tissue, and neural tissue are some types of tissue.
Organ system is a group of organs that work together to perform specific bodily
functions. For example respiratory system and circulatory system.
Plants are also made up of organ systems: the root and shoot systems. The root
system absorbs water and nutrients; the shoot system moves them to the different
parts of the plant.
An Organism is a recognizable, self-contained individual. Organisms can
be unicellular organisms such as bacteria or amoebae, or multi-cellular organisms
comprised of organs and organ systems. A human being is an example of a multi-
cellular organism.
4
Population is a group of one kind of organism (species) in an area that can
interbreed & make fertile offspring.
Ecosystem. All the living (biotic) and nonliving (abiotic) parts of an environment.
(Tropical rain forest, grassland, etc.)

I Will Apply
Read the selection below and answer the following questions based on what you have
read.
The circulatory system is one of the organ systems that make
up an organism. It is made up of the heart, blood vessels, and blood.
Your heart is about the size of your fist. It pumps and circulates blood
to the different parts of the body through the blood vessels. Certain
diseases affect the heart and cause it to function improperly. Organs
such as the heart are made up of tissues. The heart, kidneys, and
the parts that make them up are made up of tissues. This tissue is
made up of cells -the basic units of structure and function in

diseased?

Answer Key
Module 2
I will do this:
I Apply this
1. If any part of the
heart is injured or
diseased, it will affect
the normal function of
the entire cardio-
pulmonary system.
2. Injury and diseases of
the heart may hinder the
normal function of the
organism which may
eventually lead to the
death of an organism.
I Practice this
1. cell
1. Cell- red 2. an egg cell
3. cells
2. tissue- yellow 4. connective, epithelial, muscular
5. tissue
3. Organ- green
6. brain, heart, stomach, etc.
4. Organ System- 7.organs
blue 8. circulatory, nervous, digestive, etc.
9. organism
5. Organism- purple 10. Human beings

Written Assessment No. 2 Worksheet
Concept Check
4. Which pair of organ systems work together to fight viral diseases such as the flu?
A. Tissues and cells
B. stomach and liver
C. immune and excretory
D. smooth endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus
5. What will happen to an organism when even a single cell fails to deliver its
function?
A. the body will correct it.
B. it will continue to function normally
C. the organism may choose to ignore it
D. it may cause abnormality in the function and death

Part II. Guess my name. With the table shown below, identify and describe which
level of biological organization is shown in each illustration.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Reflection Question:
For the additional information, the levels of biological organization can be
classified into two; the organismal level and population level. The organismal level is
composed of cell, tissue, organ, organ system, and organism while the population
level is composed of population, community, ecosystem, and biosphere.
We know that cell is the building block of our body. How will you explain the
importance of it in completeness of the biological organization?

5. A
Reflection:
Cell as being the building block of an organism is important since an
organism is composed of trillions of cells. They provide structure for the
body, take in nutrients from food, convert those nutrients into energy, and
carry out specialized functions. Cells also contain the body’s hereditary
material and can make copies of themselves.
