Rationale
The construction and building industries are expanding on a daily basis as a results of increase in
human population and continually demand for shelter. Concrete which comprises mainly of sand,
cement and gravel is an important component required for construction of houses and roads.
However, most operation of mixing concrete in Ethiopia is done by hands as a result of lack of
insufficient concrete mixer machinery and high importation cost. In this project, I carried out the
design of a low cost manual operated concrete mixing machine. The materials used in this
project work are as follow; sand, gravel, water, mild steel, barrel , sheet metal , round bar/shaft ,
radial bearing (sliding contact/rolling/boll contact) , angle iron, hollow round bar And chart
wheel , angle bar, mild steel plate, bolts and nuts, etc. In other to achieve a good design,
feasibility studies, and preliminary tests were carried out. The materials selected for this design
were justified. Detailed designed to determine the torque, power, force, mixing chamber, etc.,
were carried out. The results obtained show that a power of manually operated mixing force of
450N, torque of 135Nm, mixing volume of 0.25485m3, were required.
Concrete is a construction material produced from three main ingredients namely, cement, fine
aggregates, coarse aggregates and water. The production process goes through various phases.
Batching, mixing, transporting, placing compacting, finishing and curing are the main ones. In
order to get quality concrete product, which satisfies both the strength and durability
requirement, great care has to be given for concreting work starting from ingredient selection.
The ingredient selected has to fulfill the requirement stated on standards. Every production
process should follow the proper scientific procedures to get the desired quality concrete
products. For this, using proper type of manual operated concrete mixer machine plays a
significant role. manual operated concrete mixer machine is all the measures that are taken

4
during concrete construction equipment selection, concrete production processes and on finished
concrete products to ensure the compliance of works with the concrete mixing type .Concrete as
a major building material, which is useful for the construction of the structural part, and as a non-
factory product, which is susceptible to variation, proper use of concrete mixer machine is
utmost important in ensuring the desired quality product. Therefore, concrete quality affects the
overall quality of buildings to a higher extent. But in Ethiopia there hasn’t been any study made
on this area yet. Considering this, investigations focusing on concrete mixer machine production
and its quality are undertaken in sidama regional state bensa zone daye town building
construction projects found in various parts of daye namely, ketene 1, ketene 2, ketene 3, ketene
4 and ketene 5. The project is carried out by collecting sample from different building project
site result data and information on of concrete mixer type and methods of concrete mixing
through questionnaire and site observation. The findings of the investigation have shown that in
most of the projects proper concrete mixer not used both for the site casted work and precast
work. This indicates that a lot has to be done to improve concrete quality in the building
construction industry. This is an indication that the test results among a significant portion of the
investigated projects have shown large variability implying the quality concrete mixeris
unsatisfactory on those projects. It is also observed that, more than half, 52.17% of the projects
have got defective lots, which fail to satisfy the compliance requirement set on the Ethiopian
building codes and standards. The design and drafting of all components of concrete mixer is
done by solid work software and Auto CAD software The result obtained in this particular work
shows that the manual operated concrete mixing machine is sufficiently high to produce good
quality of concrete.
Project description

This project is made up of different materials such as pipe, bearing and from different
metal and nonmetal structures .it has four wheels and driven manually. The overall volumetric
dimension of this sieve machine is (L*W*H) =1500mm*850mm *900mm. The total cost of the
project is 5763.43birr
