DESIGN

The following section references The Sound Transmission Inside Building Publication NOISE FROM WASTEWATER
by The British Plastic Federation. Soil and waste systems inside buildings have the potential to contribute to noises inside a property and to an adjoining property.

• Airborne noise – generated by wastewater flowing inside the pipes.

Noise from wastewater flow when it travels through a building can be an annoyance. This is unpleasant
in all homes but particularly intrusive in multi-occupancy residential and commercial properties. • Structure-borne noise – generated by vibration (acoustic resonance) of the pipe as the sound waves generated by the
wastewater transmitted through the pipe wall, pipe clips and brackets to the building structure.

Example of buildings where sound attenuation is often specified: Both sources of noise can be managed by good system design, product choice and correct installation. To further reduce

STORAGE &
HANDLING

6. Storage and Handling

GOOD SITE PR AC TICE STOR AGE IN HOT CLIMATES

• Do not throw, drop pipes, or drag them along • Ultra-violet light can affect pipes and fittings: pipe
hard surfaces colour may change and rubber seals may be degraded

• In case of mechanical handling, use protective slings • Store accordingly:

and padded supports. Metal chains and hooks should - store all materials in well-ventilated, shady conditions
not make contact with the pipe - do NOT expose to direct sunlight
- keep fittings in original packaging until required
ON -SITE STOR AGE for use

• Stack pipe lengths • Maximum stack (hot conditions): six layers high
- on a flat base
- on level ground SITE SAFET Y
- or on 75mm x 75mm timber at 1m centers (fig 6.01)
• The relevant regulations detailed in the Health &
• Provide side support with 75mm wide battens at Safety at Work Act 1974, Construction Design and
1m centres (Fig. 6.01) Management Regulations 2015, must be adhered
to on-site
• Maximum stack should not exceed 1.5m high
• MSDS data sheets are available on request
• Ideally, stacks should contain one diameter pipe size
only. Where this is not possible, stack largest diameter
pipes at base of stack. Small pipes may be nested
inside larger pipes

• If stored in the open for long periods or exposed to

strong sunlight, cover the stack with opaque sheeting

• Store fittings under cover. Do not remove from

cartons or packaging until required
